2) The soccer is changed, the soccer evolves. Things that were good in the past, does not mean that they are also good in the future.
Nowadays, the new generation of midfielders have to be very good in buildig up AND defending (old generatione: Iniesta, new generation: Verrati). Nowadays strikers who simply wait the ball are out, today the new generation of strikers have to run with the team and have the quality to defend also.
This one won't happen though since Messi most of the time will simply not defend and nor is it effective for him to use his energy to help defend. Neymar and Suarez on the other hand do help out sometimes, especially Neymar. I think the most important thing is not asking Messi to help defend (OK, if it was him who lost the ball and the ball was just right there several feet away yeah he should), the most important thing is when we have the ball he needs to make those off-the-ball movement to make himself available.
