there's only 3-4 players in history who were absolute beasts at the age of 20. messi, maradona, ronaldo, and pele. you can't measure dembele to any of these 4 as he simply isn't going to be on that level.

When he was purchased for that price, of course you can (and should) measure him against great players. If he simply isn't on that level, why pay that price?

His price has no relevance to those players of the past.

Compare his value to the other players being bought around the same 2-3 years of him would be far more accurate.

Leo doing the big bro thing after sneyke's pr team accused him of casting a shadow over his Ballon d'Or prospects.

It would be poetic justice if Dembele eventually ends up winning the award before the snake :p

Poor kid, already being scrutinized with cruelty by impatient fans, just like younger Neymar. Sometimes Barça fans are simply whining annoying spoiled people.

lol @ the absurd proposition that dembele at 20 should be compared with Messi at 20. that assumes both players are equally talented or had/have (at age 20) the same potential.

No. that's unfair, inaccurate and unreasonable: by that standard, dembele will always disappoint. It also does a disservice to Messi, because it assumes his talent is not that unique.

Comparing players at the same ages never works. If we compare Henry and Michael Owen at the age of 18 -20, you'd think Michael Owen would be the better player but we all know how that turned out.

Indeed, it doesn't make sense to compare. He did fine imo. He's not playing at a high level for a long time. He comes from Dortmund where he was great but they play a total different kind of football, it's all about those very quick counter attacks. Barcelona wants to control the game and they build up the attack until the right moment. He's only with the club for 3 weeks now, that's not alot of training sessions yet. I think he will adapt quickly, he's very technical and talented. He's very motivated and working hard, and looking at the juventus game he listens to others and doesn't just want to do his own thing.

Messi was lucky to have Ronaldinho as his mentor. He knows how important is for a young player to have that kind of positive influence from the team's best player. Its' not his job but I'd love if he'd take Dembele under his wings. Of course other experienced players like Iniesta, Pique (I think I've read somewhere that Dembele's locker room is between Iniesta's and Pique's and that's a good thing if true because they are both team leaders but their characters are totally different) and his best friends Umtiti and Digne will also help Dembele to adapt as soon as possible but it would do wonders for him if he'd know he also has Messi's full support on and off the pitch.

Wont happen that way. Messi himself seems like very introverted and boarderline autistic character, which is not a rarity among geniuses of any kind. He's not charismatic or socially 'active' on the field either, sans waving imaginary cards and complaining to refs. Obviously, with age even such people get more involved, but he certainly wont ''drive'' the team forward with locker room speeches just like Iniesta, who is also very tame and quiet person. What i think is certainly influential is his almost supernatural folotballing skills that many players would like to mimic and that sure is a good inspiration. No wonder tha even Neymar always sought to make an assist to Messi even when he, himself was in a position to shoot. Most footballers today see Messi as a God entity and that make both good and bad consequences, when playing together.

Messi ain't close to bordeline autistic. He used to be uncomfortable with publicity at a younger age but seems to handle it better now and has grown more confident. The guy seems pretty social and charismatic in closed environments. Check out the Uruguayan interview he did together with Suarez.
