Messi needs to sacrifice a bit for this kid to really shine, like he did with Neymar, but I'm not sure if he's ready to do that just yet.

The fact that he kept it simple and didn`t try to do some crazy stuff at that moment in game IMO shows that he is maybe more mature than we think. The team just pulled back from 2-0 and it was late in the game. Why the hell would he try some dribbles etc. to potentially lose the ball in a dangerous situation.
Regarding defending, what the hell do you expect. He just came back from a serious injury and the pitch was very wet. Of course he won`t go crazy and chase the ball and players like a bulldozer (or Suarez). Real life is not FIFA.
