The problem Dembélé has is Valverde’s emphasis on getting behind the ball in defence. Due to his nature he will never find a permanent spot as long as Valverde is here.

Coutinho is going to struggle too because Valverde will play him in wide midfield positions where defensive output is not as strict. This will hinder his attacking output substantially.

Coutinho works hard in that respect.

I think his issue with Dembele is partly that he already has two in Messi and Suarez that dont provide all that much defensively and to throw in another who he not sure about is too much.

If could have someone like Griezmann who will drop and defend more and maybe pivot a bit with Messi doing that he would be more inclined to play him.

Messi and Suarez are Barcas biggest strength going forward but basically no other top team have to compensate defensively as much as Barc have to for those two.

They can sneakily win tackles and steal balls a decent amount but dropping back or pressing it is not a constant to rely tactically on.

what? he was garbage when he came on. im talking about the one where arnaiz scored

Think you are talking about the different legs.

They can and need to do that more often in the big games. I was pleased with their effort this game and they worked hard off the ball.

I still domt think in games like today they drop back in position or press consistently.

It seems more off the cuff pressing if near by to try and steal ball than as part of a team shape.

In quite a few tight games Barca feel a man light in midfield when they both stay up the park so much.

all the horseshit excuses are put to rest thanks to coutinho. instead of giving the fans the pain of finding excuses for shit appearances coutinho is thriving and already gaining the trust to the coach. Trust goes both ways and is mutual, how could the coach trust a player if the latter is providing no assurance and no signs of progress. You dont get to choose your playtime, if you are.given 20 minutes you do not show integrity, hunger, discipline then maybe the next kid in bunch deserves a chance too.. he was given playtime and did nothing with it. Coutinho was too, and did something and now he starts. it is cruel justice

Not one of EV's fanboys here has been able to justify playing Gomes, Paulinho and Vidal over him.

He's played like... 1 full game since he came back from injury? And he's not being benched in favor of prime Ronaldinho, he's being benched in favor of fucking Paulinho, Vidal and Gomes.

Coutinho is experienced world class player and Dembele is 20y old kid who jet has to fully develop and he won’t be able to do that in this way. It’s unfair to compare them. Valverde needs to grow a pair and let this hugely talented kid play few games in a row. If Gomes and Paulinho are eligible to play few games in a row so is Dembele.

you've got to be trolling at this stage.. the kid is 20, in a new league, new team, new language and a huge pricetag looming on his shoulders. Coutinho is 25, experienced and was the main man at Liverpool, huge difference.

you talk about trust but how in the hell can Valverde trust Gomes? hes a certified dud. the guy blows every single chance he gets and still he's first off the damn bench - no assurances and no signs of progress and thats 2 years.. you can't really expect much from a guy whos just came back to fitness to thrive in the last 15mins when the rest of the team are either in holiday mode (were 4-0 up etc) or needing a goal, in which the general idea is 'give the ball to Messi and pray'

Don't bother. We paid so much for this kid the best we could do is hope he succeeds, that's why most want to give him playing time. To me he's a dud, hasn't shown anything besides being fast and having a few nice dribbles after spending most of the time losing the ball. However you can't blame people for believing he can amount to much more since he had a good season last year, I just don't think he's gonna fit in with barca
