Only half of current Barca squad are native spanish speakers so it would be only natural that english on at least rudimentary level is/was common.

Well, yeah. Spanish must be closer to other southern languages. I would imagine that with a complete foreigner from, say, germany, they would still communicate in english for the first time at least. It's just that english is so easy to learn and popular that it makes sense.Makes no sense for it to be English when you're playing in Spain and most of the foreigners speak a fellow Romance language.
