Palpapably clear last season at this time under Xavi that Lamine is the most vital attacking player in the team - then he was only 16
He has to be partnered with another WC talent in attack, his absence highlights that there is no one player in the squad to replace his playmaking. You can easily see as the game slows down with a low block of Atletico the space disappears - shots from distance were a non factor, leaving it to dribbling into the area or reliant on one touch passing to release an attacker into a scoring position
Credit to Atletico, they withstood a very intense 1st half only to be down 0-1. The Norweigan striker was effective but surprised Pau Victor never came on or even Pablo Torre for Fermin who never was able to unleash that shot of his from long-range. Match played out in typically Simeone fashion, nicking a win at the end
Never a penalty, irrespective of what the capital club benefit from - inadvertent handball should never be a pk. I credit the effort after many of the matches we’ve seen of late, the loss of the early dominating form. As I mentioned in October, I prefer to be peaking in March than early in the season
Olmo should’ve been more effective but a recovering player. Xavi was panned for most of summer and start to this season yet by Jornada 19, we’re actually with 3 less pts under Flick and 5 Liga losses vs only 2 losses under Xavi. Styles are certainly different and we’ve been more entertained under Flick but gaps are similar to what they were under Xavi
FB watch - I thought Kounde outplayed Balde, again and even presented more danger into attacking third. Balde provides verticality but we saw little of it last night from the team as a whole
Going into 2nd half of season, reinforcements are needed even though 1:1 and Olmo/Pau registrations remain in question. FB and a wide player who can add a much needed vertical dimension
