2021 Ballon d'Or

It’s kind of crazy how Messi ended up being ballon d’or favorite because I had completely written off his chances at the start of the season. So much shit had to fall into place:

-CL won by a team with no major stars
-Euros won by a team with no major stars
-Barca pulling off two late Copa comebacks to give Messi a club trophy
-Lewandowski getting injured at the key part of the season
-PSG losing Ligue 1 and Mbappe having an historic fail at the Euros
-CR losing Serie A and then putting up R16 disasterclasses in CL and Euros
-Argentina winning a big pk shootout and then beating Brazil in Brazil

Stunning if it happens

well, because the award should be given to the best player during an entire season, taking all trophies into account as well as individual performances. if these standards are used, messi is not a clear favourite, only one among a handful of others who all are worthy of the award. messi's 'name' seems to give him a plus, though, which is unfair

RUBBISH ABSOLUTE RUBBISH

In 2021: 40 goals, 14 assists. Won Copa America & Copa del Rey. As well as Copa MVP, Top Goalscorer and the title in Brazil against Brazil.

i dont think the copa del rey has any importance, its mainly the copa america.

messigician i dont deny the copa america win is a big boost for leo. but that's really about it. the copa doesnt matter, any more than bayern's (almost) annual pokal tite, or who-ever-won-it's FA cup in england. UCL>international titles>leagues is usually the relevant hierarchy

my point being that, in context, then, messi hasnt exactly shown he is the 'best' (certainly today he isnt).

I hope it is all finished and Messi has won as the Benz scored another two tonight, Cronaldo two last night and Lewa got three

In a year with international tournament, it will have bigger effect. Remember that this Copa America is the first tittle for Argentina in nearly 30 years (the latest is from 1993). So before Messi, Argentina with brillants players like Batistuta, Riquelme, Veron, Zanetti...failed to win anything big since 1993. So you know the value of this year Copa America, even more historic when Maradona passed away a year before. Messi also has great performance, best player, top scorer, top assiter.

What really helds Messi back is he hasn't been great with PSG. He has some magical moments but overall still far from his expection.

You bet 7 units on Lewa, you get 4 units if he wins
You bet 4 units on Messi, you get 5 units if he wins

and so on...

which means the highest return for the same amount of bet indicates a more risky bet
