25 - Wojciech Szczęsny

Was a stupid mistake I agree, but he should still play the Copa Del Rey matches. He has a different profile than Pena, one we might need.

He'll be suspended for next CDR game. AFAIK direct red cards are carried over in all domestic competitions.

Pena probably gets to that throughball first.

Szczensny probably saves the subsequent freekick.

It is what it is.

FK wouldn't happen if he gets to the ball first though.

I think Tek is a better GK but Pena is a better sweeper keeper which is important with a high backline. So could see why Flick prefers Inaki. Another reason was probably communication. Not easy to integrate a new GK mid-season when he doesn't speak language.

OTOH there will be games, especially in CL where we will need a GK to "carry us" like Courtouis is constantly doing in Madrid and I would trust Tek more with that. Pena has been better than expected so far but it's hard to say he really made any save that a Barca GK is not expected to make. And stats don't lie, we hardly ever keep a clean sheet with him. Can't only blame him with a risky way we are set up ofc but don't think backline has full confidence in him and vice-versa.

What you saw yesterday is exactly what I had warned you against. He's got such things in his repertoire; after 4 or 5 of outstanding saves, he'll do something that makes you scratch your head. Most of the time he can get away with his donkey moments but sometimes it can be very costly.

Agree but it was a very costly mistake. Led to a goal anyway.
If costly, in a sense that it killed the show and stopped the winning from going up to 7:1 then that's forgivable.

However, it might have been too costly for his own good. Pena came on and did good, perhaps solidified his place as #1.
There's no reason now to substitute Pena, until he does something like Szczęsny did.

I see that and I think just dumb really, imagine if somehow the result was overturned? He'd literally get smoked

And he was, on more than a few occasions, while in Arsenal, Poland's NT, and Juve....
I am not too sure about A.S. Roma I never followed him while he was there, but chances are he made a few fuck ups too.

Still, the overall balance - on the big picture - was right. He was and is an excellent goalkeeper and under normal circumstances, the likes of Pena, don't stand a chance with him in the long run.
But in this case, Szczęsny is not a long term solution for F.C. Barcelona goalkeeping needs...Kind of like Lewandowski being a long term solution of being a primary striker at 36.

Absolutely, it's clear he is an emergency solution due to unique circumstances - not sure Barça could've gotten a player with even half the player's quality in the open market. Fortuitous solution but an absolute error lying in plain sight

I think we are good going forward with Iñaki and Mats, especially if the German is eventually moved on and invest or integrate one of a couple youth gems that are already knocking on the door

However there's also Iñak's contract situation (expiring in '26) which will be impacted with what happens this summer with GK depth. So Deco has a full plate to address carefully

If we're honest we have 3 goalkeepers that are good enough to be a second choice keeper but no one to be good enough to be first choice keeper at a top club.

Tek, Ter, Pena. They all ain't it. Old, no aura, no grit.
Spuds bought some random fella called Kinský, and apparently he's THAT GUY.

Barca has to do the same, minimum. New blood needed.
