4 - Ronald Araújo

Not sure what he did wrong? Gave a freekick away after the manager tells players to play super high line. Just looking at Araujo you know that's not what he's going to be good at.

Oh was that his freekick (maybe questionable, but also very close to the penalty box) as well?
On the first goal, he really was terribly slow in a situation that is 101 for a CB. Did he play another position before? If not, he clearly relied too much on physicality, that was a fault a professional defender shouldn't make.

edit: not a big fan of blaming players for goals after the fact, but still feel it should be pointed out, as he is such a big fan favourite here.

For all the 2v2s, 2v3s, 2v4s Real had Mingueza, Araujo and Lenglet defended reasonably well. No problem on that front.

His buildup was atrocious though. Needs to get much better at that.

Could have pressured Benzema better in 1st goal, but tbf it was great finish from frenchman
Araujo is a physical CB, more than a technical one. The problem is that all 3 CB we started today was like that.

It wasn't the finish or the pressure, it was the lack of awareness.
This was a clear situation, the ball is free on the flank, everyone knows the cross is coming. Benzema running, Araujo jogging, not reacting, not there at all.
It's a Dembele vs Liverpool type situation for a CB

Not so sure tbh. His "acclaimed" speed is questionable, or maybe he's just rusty because he was forced in a bad game after more than a month off.

He might be one of those who are fast only on longer distances but with slow reaction times. In the CB business, as far as I know, the explosion is almost everything. Mingueza has it, he doesn't. Benzema can't take off from near him and, in such a short time, be already outside touching distance.

If you react too fast and tried to beat him from start, it will be easy for CF to stop moving and be left totally open. The defenders need to be reactionary and well timed there.
That is extremely difficult with someone like Benzema, whom I would argue has one of the greatest positional awareness for attacker in history of the game.

You dont suddenly become a ball playing CB. Not when you are so extremely limited as Araujo. Even we has all the space and time in the world he looks so uncomfortable.
