I think people are underestimating Puyol. Sure he's old and has frequent injuries, but he can still give us 20-ish great games if he stays health for such a period of time. And in those 20 games, he'll be better than both Pique and Mascherano. Everyone's talking as if he's already retired.

He's been like that too since very young too. I've heard Iniesta say when he first arrived at la Masia he would love to hang out with Puyol "cus he felt safe."

Piqué really needs Puyol at this side. I hope Puyol stays fit this season, he is so important to us and the greatest captain I can imagine.
Pique has suffered by Puyol's absence more than anyone. And unfortunately with the number of operations Puyol has had, it is hard to imagine his body holding up much longer.

Puyol himself has stated that if he suffers the same injury problems this coming season, he may consider retiring. That would give him the opportunity to move into coaching. I would like to see him earn his stripes with Barca B for a season or two, see how he develops, and then if the timing is right, give him a shot with the senior side, a la Pep.

I think he has the right characteristics to become an excellent coach. He already has the respect of his peers and he obviously has the leadership skills.

What do you guys think?

I think the majority agrees when we say the Puyol could be an excellent coach and could take over The Barcelona Ship someday, but Xavi could also.

Looking at Puyol's age and Xavi's age I say this should be done ; Puyol retires next season, starts learning the ropes of being a coach.
He will start at Barca B as you said, then after being an assistent-coach he becomes the coach. Xavi takes the same routine, and eventually Xavi becomes Puyol's assistent and within a few years, Xavi the mastermind himself will be leading Barcelona. :thumbsup2:

The Barça captain told the media this morning: “Tito asked us to give everything for the Club, which would be the best way to help him. So that is what we will do”.

“The team are still very affected, but we will be right by his side”.

Asked about a possible substitute for Tito, Puyol replied: “all the names being mentioned are capable of being in charge of Barça. Whoever comes, we’ll help him as much as possible”.

Carles Puyol spoke to the media at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper this morning and expressed the feelings that the squad were feeling after the news of Tito Vilanova’s departure: “the truth is that it was a very hard blow for us and unfortunately, we’ve suffered quite a few recently. This has been the toughest though. We didn’t expect anything like that. The team is really affected by this still and Tito is very much present for us. We want to send him our power. He explained the situation and transmitted his strength to us. We are with him all the way”.

Puyol also stressed that the situation would create a further motivation for the players: “this isn’t about a coach or a player being forced out, it’s an illness and what counts most is the person. Tito asked us to give everything for the Club, which would be the best way to help him. So that is what we will do. We will keep working as hard as we can and if he can take pleasure from our results, then all the better”.

Quizzed about a possible successor to Tito, Puyol insisted that the board needed to take the decision in an atmosphere of calm: “all the names being mentioned are capable of being in charge of Barça. Whoever comes, we’ll help him as much as possible. We have our own way of playing and our own philosophy of football I am convinced they will be looking for a coach who can adapt to this and that they will make a good choice”.

Puyol is still on the way back from injury and he explained: “I’m getting better. I really want to train with the rest of the players, but I can’t do that just yet. I’m not putting down any date for when I’ll be back. It’s been a hard year with three operations and when I do come back I want to be sure I am 100%”

Finally, the Club captain was asked about Neymar and he expressed his belief that : “Neymar is a great player, really good one on one. He may be young, but he’s played in some very big games – he’s ready to play for Barça”. As to any possible move away from the Camp Nou by Cesc, Puyol was adamant: “I don’t think he’ll be leaving”.
