I could never buy Gavi as a hard man - he has the face and hair of a model and is fairly slim/lean and slight.
But then appearances can be deceiving.

He causes a good deal of defensive instability when he comes on. When pressing he just lurches straight at the ball and is easy to pass around. He also runs into zones occupied by teammates, leaving holes in our shape.

To be fair to him he isnt a top AM and certainly not in an open game where would be wanting the AM to carry ball or open up passes to front three.
It isnt his game.
Not the first time Garcia has been preferred deeper and would guess it was down to Flick again wanting more physicality in there and knowing Dortmund will be throwing men into box.
Gavi I am not sure he trusts there as much in those situations due to his height and the way he closes down so much at moment.
As long as Gavi can keep a level for remainder of season to allow rotation and improve on ball when deeper and at AM v teams that sit back that is enough for now and hopefully can kick on next season.
