Alexis is one of the smartest players off the ball, he was showing it at Barca every week. At Arsenal he has the privelege to do less "dirty" work and his off-the-ball attribute is not as evident there. But here he was creating chances for Messi and others just with his movement, it was fascinating to watch. Alexis is very sloppy, but certainly not dumb.

Just got bit nostalgic and found it funny as BBZ called Alexis dumb. Don't take it too serious

Fact of the matter is we don't really need another player who takes a lot of time on the ball, or who always tries to beat his man and create something out of nothing thats what we have Messi, Neymar, and Suarez for (to a lesser extent).

I guess uneducated would be the term. I've read he was very poor as a kid and used to work as a miner, to provide for his family. But as far as game intelligence is concerned, he is one of the best. All you have to do is see the goal he scored vs Madrid, and you understand that in game intelligence and creativity were never his problem. He won Serie A player of the year before we signed him as well.

His problems at Barca were mostly related to confidence. Once he got over them he started to score some absolute golazos in his last season, and continued to do so in England and for Chile ever since.

An excellent creator as well, with some beautiful key passes and assists. His time at Barça definitely improved his passing ability.

Honestly, no. If you watch him his main purpose is to be the link between defense and attack. Sounds stupid i know thats essentially a textbook definition of a midfielder, but thats what he embodies and thats why is so good. Because he is the simple footballer, so much like xavi, doesn't fool around with the ball, he is there to provide for the team. I mean don't get me wrong he is not a machine either, he has his moments of flair and audacity, but thats not his style he is generally there to play a passing game, and everyone benefits from it.

Coutinho is more individualistic, more of a player to exploit his talents in the last third, but we dont really need that.

I agree. With him it would be the same with Alexis. They are still great players, but they need to be the star of their team to reach their heights.
