With the shit league he plays in he might actually nick one of Messi's records - 50 in the league of 73 overrall. His ratio is better than Messi in 2011/12 atm. Hard to keep it up, but sadly the state of the German league right now it wouldn't surprise me.

Messi went nuclear in the 2nd half of the season in 11/12. Up until New Year's, he only had 25 goals or so. And then scored about 48 Jan - May.

He was actually on an even bigger tear in 12/13. 35 up until New Year's. He would have finished with ~75-80 imo if he didn't get injured v PSG. Still ended up with 60, lol.

Lewa's at 16 goals in 12 games in BL. He needs another 35 in 22 games even if he plays all of them, which he might not if Bayern go deep in CL. CR7's start to 14/15 was also blistering. He was at 22 goals in Liga in 12 games at one point. And he ended up falling short at 47 Liga goals.

Bundesliga record is still Gerd Müller with 40 goals in 1971/72, Lewandowski could break it this season but that would already be a big achievement. 50 seems very very unlikely though.

No offense to anyone, but there is no way that 4 best strikers ever are all born in the same decade.
It's inane to compare current strikers with past ones as they are playing like 5x more matches per season than in the past, especially in eurocups and as someone already said, against lots of minnows, who are only participating, because FIFA/UEFA have also bought into "let's make everything inclooosive" politiking (and money, of course).

A few things off my chest. (I will back this up with data in a 2nd post):

a) The amount of official CL matches (excluding qualifiers) a team can at max play have not noticably gone up or down from players "back then"
 • 11-12 matches between 1992 and 1999
 • 17 matches between 1999 and 2003 (due to the introduction of a 2nd group stage)
 • 13 matches ever since 2003 (modern format)

b) "Minows" have been measurably phased out by UEFA over the course of the years
 • An average of 30% of teams between 1992 and 1999 have been from Top 5 highest performing leagues in those respective international campaigns
 • An average of 48% of teams between 1999 and 2003 have been from Top 5 highest performing leagues in those respective international campaigns
 • An average of 49% of teams between 2003 and 2010 have been from Top 5 highest performing leagues in those respective international campaigns
 • An average of 52% of teams between 2010 and 2019 have been from Top 5 highest performing leagues in those respective international campaigns
Note: The Top Leagues taken into account aren't always the "usual suspects" but the leagues which accumulated the highest coefficient points in that specific int. campaign - Source
Note[SUP]2[/SUP]: obviously (especially) in the 90s the concept of a Top 5 wasn't as dominant as it is since the past 20 years so maybe the next point c) is being indicative here as to how hard scoring is/was

c) The average amount of goals scored in modern CL football has increased by around 12% towards both the 90s and 2000s
 • 2.63 goals per CL game have been scored between 1992 and 1999
 • 2.73 goals per CL game have been scored between 1999 and 2003
 • 2.54 goals per CL game have been scored between 2003 and 2010
 • 2.92 goals per CL game have been scored between 2010 and 2019
Note: Scoring peaked between 2016 and 2018 with over 3 goals on avg, but has been slightly going down again since the introduction of the newly allocated 4th CL team for the 4th placed league and the automatic group stage entry for EL winners

d) Top scorers have since this decade averaged a much higher goal per game ratio than in the 90s and 2000s
 • Top scorers averaged around 0.69 goals per game between 1992 and 1999
 • Top scorers averaged around 0.62 goals per game between 1999 and 2003
 • Top scorers averaged around 0.67 goals per game between 2003 and 2010
 • Top scorers averaged around 1.02 goals per game between 2010 and 2019
Note: Those Top scorers since 2010 are all Messi and Ronaldo numbers actually. Well yeah they are annomalys so numbers in this example are skewed. That's why I took a look at the "next best" players outside these, and they are still between 8-10 goals per CL campaign (highest was Mario Gomez in 2011 with 12 goals) and are completely in line with scorers from the 2000s. However, Lewandowski is at 10 goals in the 5th game of the group stage, so he is actually competing with the two in numbers and we might see him beating Van Nistelroys seasons.

As a whole what I conclude from this data is that statstically competition in the CL got tougher overall, not easier.
There is 12% more goals scored nowadays than back then, so scoring seems a tad easier. But not to the point where a comparison between strikers today and strikers back is inane.

Interesting data Yannik. Looking at your second post of data you can see the CL campaings where they average 2.8 goal/match + were more like freak years in the early 00's and 90's but from 12/13 you can clearly see that 2.8 goals/match + are getting reached consistently.

At the end of the day we are talking about an average of almost ~1 goal each 2 games scored more overall which coincides with give or take 34 goals scored more in a CL campaign , not that huge of a difference. We can partly attribute that to CR7 and Messi being goalscoring machines. T

Ballon D'Or has for so long been an uneducated Messi-CR-Premier League bias combination that I don't know how people thought a Polish dude playing for German team had a chance here. For so long it has been a culture-race-religion contest. Just look where Mahrez got in.
