Do you know any examples of that? A player with an expiring contract can accept the best wage terms he can get and reject any other offers and the selling club is forced to sell if they want any money for him at all.
The player has leverage to be sure, but the the more bidders there are, the team also has options unless the contract is just about to expire.
Danilo for instance he still had the remainder of this season plus the next under contract with Porto. He was in high demand from big clubs who could all offer him comparable wages. Porto still had plenty of leverage in the negotiation to demand that huge price for him.
Would he have cost more if he had 3 more years under contract instead of 1, possibly, double more, doubtful. If Barca weren't transfer banned, I think Porto could have leveraged RM and Barca against each other and gotten more for him under the same situation.
