Seems like a very likable teammate and clearly his versatility, pace & directness are assets...yet, I still find him to be an inadequate defender...His positioning can be absolutely sophomoric when attempting to maintain the offside trap - 2nd straight match he has been guilty of playing his man on for a 1v1

^ That is because he is basically a winger, not a defender :) I really hate this trend of using midfielder at CB position. It is ok to have one or two like Mascherano or Busi to cover in emergency but shouldn't be followed as general policy.

Thing is, we need our fullbacks to have an extremely well rounded attacking game in order to carry out our gameplan. How many great defenders can do what the likes of Alba, Adriano and Alves does for us in attack? It's really a trade-off: What do we need the most, defensive stability or attacking outlets? The way we play, I think it's an easy answer.

Solid in almost any position, scoring important goals, his best season yet. The new Dani Alves. :alveshat:

I didn't really like him the previous years he was kind of on par with Maxwell. This season he is a beast and the fans should appreciate him more.

this player is my highlight this season, by far! I love how he pushes forward and isn't afraid of taking a shot from long range. He's a great left/right back but I'd love to see him play more as a winger so he can score more goals (won't happen unfortunately because we lack defenders...). I'm addicted to the way he scores and celebrates his goals. So much passion and emotion!

also he has so much swag!

Well you need fullbacks that aren't too much of a liability in any one aspect of the game. You can't have both fullbacks that are a little suspect defensively (Adriano moreso than Alba). During Pep's years we attacked from Alves' wing whereas Abidal was usually more conservative. Both of them were much better defensively than what we have at the moment, not to mention the fact that both Alves and particularly Abidal were taller and so helped in long ball situations and corners. It isn't that everybody discovered Adriano's quality all of a sudden, it's just that Alves was better than him and that's why he was the first choice.

Alves is a much better defender than Adriano and when Danny was asked to be more conservative (for example against Madrid when he had to go against Cristiano) he mostly did his job well (apart from this year when he's been in a funk all season long). The fact of the matter is that Adriano is good with the ball but I don't have much confidence in him defensively. Especially away from home when we go up against top opposition who have quality in attack. I don't think any quality frontline in the world is overly concerned or intimidated by our back 4. Overcoming the barca backline is not the hard part for opposing teams.

I wonder why he isn't simply played at right wing. We don't have any rotation there while we have 4-5 players in the left wing.

I like him a lot. Everytime he plays he is very good. The only thing he is bad at is positioning but he makes up for it. Honestly the way the season is going I'd rather see him start and Alves being his sub.
