it's funny that everyone lionises '86 as a one-man-band thing but forgets that Garrincha did a one-man-band effort back in '62 when Pele went down injured in the groups (and this after being the primary force in '58). and in terms of permitted violence '62 makes '86 look as extreme as upper-class WASPs having sex, so Garrincha had to cope with much more against him. AND he was a winger. AND a cripple.

Garrincha > Maradona

I didn't know there were stills upper- and under class wasps, I thought the workers rebellion against the royal aristocracy had led to a structural, economical and political revolution.

I wonder what part Pele played in erasing Garrincha from history. I mean being an alcoholic obviously hurt his case, but indulgence didn't kill Maradona or George Best.

It baffles my mind what Garrincha could do with a crooked spine and two different sized legs. It doesn't make no fucking sense.

And yeah, probably the most talented player of all time.

Both Maradona and George Best came at different time from Pele which mean they can be thought of in a different era than Pele but they had to choose a golden boy for Pele's generation, and it wasn't the drunkard. George Best isn't mentioned in the same breathe as the players discussed here.

after looking at some garrincha footage i remain unconvinced that he was the most talented, ever.

granted, he was good -phenomenal- but i think that is a claim too far

love that clip. it's even funnier if you have actually seen British porn which is the sleaziest shit ever.

and Leo plays in a totally different era. the lack of brutality (or rather, the punishment for brutality) is offset by a MUCH faster pace to the game and much higher physical demands placed on the body. you couldn't do coke and stay a top-level footballer these days - look at what happened to Mutu's form when he discovered it at Chelsea.

They played a totaly different type of football though. Garrincha was more Iniesta then Messi, actually Alves attacking play reminds me alot of Garrincha, although not as good. But a absolutly brilliant player, absolutly better then Pele, but noone remembers a playmaker as much as a striker :/

the things he did were absolutely spellbinding. to dance like that back then, repeatedly, and against such endless aggression... wow. and to do that at the highest level? twice? he only lost one international game out of fifty ffs, and that was his last one when Hungary kicked him off the park in '66 under the supervision of an English ref!

and his life away from the game is so mental it makes Maradona look like Xavi.

Best isn't mentioned in the same breath, but he's mentioned.

You don't think it's entirely possible Pele could have played his hand in making sure Garrincha was forgotten? I'm not trying to play HBA here and conduct a conspiracy, but it would fit Pele's antics.

Inviting the wrath of HBA though... Why would a guy, who was capable of scoring 66 goals when he was a 17 year old kid, have to resort to such calamity!?

The same reason he has tried to downplay everyone who came after him who wasn't his hand selected Brazilian successors, while promoting his own legacy?

I don't know to what degree has Pele elevated himself above his team mate Garrincha, but it is not impossible. But I think it had to do more with FIFA than Pele, the latter just took full advantage and if FIFA was a person, he/she would be like WTF??

To FIFA's credit though, you'd think they would actually elevate someone with a drug problem? I mean fun and religion aside, alcohol and coke are not things you promote, and nor should you as a sports institution and Pele was a good boy also insanely talented and decorated so it makes all sense. Maradona's name would have been wiped had he been in an older generation but there were colored tv in every corner at the time and he promoted himself as well so they couldn't shut him up or hide him.

They even split the player of the century between him and Pele.
