Well Iniesta is one of my favourite players but there's no doubt in my mind Pirlo was better last season & even though Iniesta was given player of the tournament in the Euro, Pirlo again should've been given that award.

Two players who were absolutely wonderful during the tournament, both were as important for their country. The player who's team won got the award but the other should have gotten it...why?

Also besides vs England where he was fantastic he was simply very good throughout the rest of the tournament.

The Pirlo hype was a bit too exaggerated I thought, mainly because of the panenka penalty against Joe "Schmeichel" Hart. He stood out dictating the game in a team where he was the only world class playmaker. Iniesta on the other hand looked a class above in a team full of the best playmakers of this generation (Busquets, Alonso, Fabregas, Silva, Xavi) while not even playing in his favoured position and without any strikers upfront to feed (which is a bit of a killer for a playmaker, no wonder his assist stats don't tell the whole story). Iniesta was the only cutting edge Spain had without Villa around. Everything went through that left flank with him and Alba. If you put Iniesta in Italy's team instead of Montolivo in that trequartista position behind Balotelli and Cassano, imagine how much more he would individually stand out in that team. No disrespect to Pirlo but Iniesta is and was different class. I agree however that Pirlo had the better domestic season. Which was mainly because Iniesta was injured for 1/3 of the season.

There shouldnt be any doubt that Iniesta and Xavi are better than Pirlo

Just like there shoudn't be any doubt that Pirlo has had a better year than both of them and deserves to be second to Messi for the Ballon d'Or race. Sadly that ain't going to happen. :(

But there is doubt because it seems to me that they've had a fairly even spread of things this year.

Pirlo won the league, lost the Cup and lost in the final of the European.

Xavi and Iniesta came runners-up in the league, came close to another CL final, won the Cup and won the European outclassing the team Pirlo was on.

idk, for me I think Ballon d'Or should be based purely on individual performance, not necessarily if your team ended up doing well or not. If YOU were awesome but your team blew it, that doesn't make you any less awesome. But I guess it's not always seen that way.

That being said it's still hard to decide, because Pirlo had a much better league performance, but then there was Iniesta in the Euros. They're pretty even IMO.

Well that's fair enough but the Spanish NT were hot favourites & are regarded by most as the best NT ever, where as Italy were written off pretty much by everyone but Pirlo carried them to the final. The only reason they were so horrible in WC2010 was because he was injured & again he was also the best player of WC06 but Zidane took the award.

Yes Mitkoa i actually do rate him above Iniesta but slightly below Xavi.

If we are talking about trophies then Torres should get the Ballon d'Or, but we all know that would be nonsense. Trophies are important when it comes to individual awards but they are not the only thing that counts.

Pirlo was the heart and soul of almost every Juve attack last year, can you say the same thing about Xavi and Iniesta? Not really. It was Messi and Busquets that carried the team last year. Oh and it's definitely not Pirlo's fault that he didn't have CL football last year. And as far as the Euro Cup is concerned, a team called 'average' by almost every one in the beginning of the EC made it to the final because of this man. Iniesta had anything but an average team around him, they were the favourites to win the damn thing.

Anyways it's not Iniesta who'll (probably) take Pirlo's place in the Ballon d'Or Top 3 race, it's Ronaldo and that really makes me very angry.

@Azzido
Lol great minds think alike! :)

Well all know individual awards are based on team achievements, but obviously the player has to be up their in performances to warrant being in the top 3.

Yes unfortunately Ronaldo will be there, he actually did ok for Portugal so it will be harder to exclude him. I do agree that Pirlo should be acknowledged in some way, but it will probably be Messi - Ronaldo - Iniesta.

Yeah let's blame CR instead, not Iniesta. Unfortunately I don't think CR will ever NOT be in contention just because of how "big" his name is.
