Why's that a foolish thing? To boost the confidence of a player who has been exceptional since he returned from loan is good management. Rafa was asked if Ronaldo was the best player in the world and he decided to not say. That's going to tick a guy like ronaldo off if he hears that.
Also, Wenger did say "statistically" the best DM in retaliation to Gary Neville saying Arsenal lack Strength in the middle.
“Coquelin has the best defensive statistics and numbers in Europe. You watch football like I watch football. I don’t know what people see. Defensively, Coquelin is doing a great job,” he told reporters.
“Look, I am not against opinion. People can say they don’t think Arsenal is good enough. I accept that. But it is dangerous to say 'He will never be a player’ — especially when the comment has come from people in football".
Wenger is spot on. He's not saying he's the best, he's saying statistically. Tackles won as a % and interceptions won.

The difference is that Ronaldo's arguably one place off being the best, while Coquelin for all good he's shown so far isn't even in the top 5 defensive midfielders in the world.
Comparing statistics after 3 games like the Metro does is laughable by the way.

It's not after 3 games. Check his stats from Jan, when he returned to the PL. Based on statistics alone, Coquelin is unquestionably the best defensive player in the Premier League since he returned to the club. No I'm not Haruko Goon.

But your average fan is obviously going to say Matic for the sake of it. He's a Chelsea player and therefore an automatic choice as "best in the world". Which is wrong. Rewatch Chelsea vs City, when City won 3-0. Matic was in nomans land twice for the three goals and generally extremely sloppy.

Coquelin isn't the best, but he transformed us last season. He does his job very well and doesn't deserve to be scapegoated. If anything, it was the lack of a top striker and world class goalkeeper that cost us last season. Wenger signed a world class keeper this summer, but there just wasn't a striker available that would've upgraded on Giroud.

There is noone to buy up front. No point in just paying massive fees for mediocre. Wenger took the smart route. Worst case scenario is Giroud gets injured; Even so, Alexis CF, Theo RW. Oxlade/Campbell as the wide right options.
So much hooha being spoken about Arsenal, our attacking options are much better than United, but nobody is mentioning them. Rooney/Deepay/Martial? Unthinkably bad for a club like United. Januzaj/DiMaria/VanPersie all sold.
