They lost 12 million.

They have sold him for around 17m and thought the taxes etc paid for him at time took the price to around 36/37m.

Could be wrong.

Edit: Looking back a lot of the media at time said Real paid 32m plus taxes of around 6m so he cost in region of 38m which would suggest they have lost over 20m on him.

Real is much better at selling players than us. That is not even up for debate.

Probably, but they are much worse at buying players which balances itself out.

The illaramendi transfer has been a total failure from the moment he was bought to moment he was sold.

That whole transfer was certainly a bust for RM. But nice move for Real Sociedad and maybe Illarra will get back on track. I think he is a really good player.

It was a good move at that moment, he was one of the most promising young spanish players. He had a great cup and was labeled the new Xabi Alonso.

He got plenty of chances just looked far too nervous and didnt seem to have arrogance to play at top club.

He never got a chance to play his natural position under Carlo. He use to play as a RCM with Xabi during his first season and last season, he played along side Kroos who was still the deepest. And this is all when Carlo didn't forget him on the bench which was usually 98% of the time.

Play him as a CDM and we'll see the Illaramendi from La Real. I did read he had some type of mental issues though and couldn't cope being at a big club.

RMs transfer buys bad? We've been making humongous revenues getting money back for stars moving on (Ozil, Higuain, Di Maria, Morata.. kind of..) and made very smart buys/loan moves for small money (Adebayor, Essien, Chicha, Carvalho, Callejon, Carvajal). There were very few transfer busts since 2009 where we splashed out and got very little or zilch out of the player (Kaka, Sahin, Illarra). Nearly all other 10-30M transfers were very effective pieces of business.

As for Asier, no, he never got played at CDM. Only one game and one half kickstarted and decided that - Dortmund. Whether it sat in his mind since or not, he's never been anything worthwhile since. When a manager prefers to start Ramos at CDM over you, you know you're a waste of everybody's time.
