I thought the club released a statement basically distancing themselves from Bielsa and his opinions, and not backing him up or something?

Correct. They basically opposed everything he said. Here's a short translation, with all important parts!

1. The club doesn't in any way share the personal opinion of Marcelo Bielsa, expressed during yesterdays press conference, regarding the evolution of the work, the fulfillment of the contract or the professionality of the persons involved in the work.
2. Athletic Club want to testify as to the correct fulfillment of the contract, which is why it asks for forgiveness for the damage done to the company and its workers by one of the clubs employees [Marcelo Bielsa, obv].
3. Basically saying that only the club could assess how well the work had been done because they have qualified people [as opposed to Bielsa] working with it, and that only the club itself [and, again, not Bielsa] is responsible for the facilities.

3rd point obviously a bit more freely translated.

No idea why they did it... Incredibly stupid statement

You really don't understand the construction business. The contractor probably has a lump sum payment in his pocket, plus any defamation damages plus they could walk out on Ateltico leaving them with massive debts over an unfinished building and to bring in a new contractor would put the clun in a terrible leverage position.

Wouldn't that be breaking the contract? Furthermore, if they've already done so they could get sued (right?)

Depending of the specific clauses of the contract, but in most cases Athletic could either claim an estoppel or damages to be paid by the construction company for not fulfilling its legal obligations.

In theory yes, but this is Spain we are talking about...

Years in court will do Ateltico more harm than it would do to the contractor. Contractors walking out happens and how are you are going to get back your money? Between appeals and loop holes and counter arguments Ateltico will be in segunda.

Not sure how much you know about breach of contract cases, but usually cases involving material breach do not take that long. In addition to that, I believe that Athletic Club has, indeed, the necessary funds to deal with a suit of this manner accordingly.

But then again, it's Spain...

Athletic is possibly the club with the best economy in Spain, not counting the big two. + It'd be much worse PR for a company which probably has the most of its customers in Basque Country to fight a club as important as Athletic*

* If it's Floro Perez company, then that changes everything, obviously

It would be correct..if it weren't for the fact that the same contractor is the most important contractor in Bilbao, that the city will fund the building of the new stadium and the company that will do the building is, as you can guess, the one that Bielsa pissed off.
