For me the only two options are
1. Messi at AM with two more defensive minded players covering him and for that need a new RW where Coutinho could play or rotate with Messi.
2. Messi goes back to the RW and holds his position more and a new more atacking minded midfielder acts as the playmaker with more variation than trying to find Messi all the time. Messi gets the ball less but in better situations nearer the box.
I would rather the second one as think with Messi in centre the team defer to him too much and the passing is slowed down which Messi less active off the ball contributes to. Against good teams left needing an all time great Messi pass to break down ten opposition players. Too predictable.
Cant see anyway Messi in midfield as a CM works and certainly not with another attacking player like Coutinho.
Been saying the same thing basically. Messi can't play midfield except if he is backed by a double pivot. Basically, when he losses the ball, which he will, we need to have two players closer to each other to deal with the threat.
So, he can play CAM in a 4-2-3-1. The wide midfielders, drop in transition and form a 4-4-2, with Messi and Suarez top. Or, even better, we start to press more, at least in the bigger games.
Also agree that the best thing would be for Messi to go back to RW, and we bring in players to strenghten that flank and actually engage Messi there. In this way we also get a lot of pressure off Neymar and Suarez. Trere's absolutely no coincidence that Neymar is suffocated after Alves left and Messi moved from RW. Teams leave Rakitic/Roberto more space because they don't fear them like they feared Alvessi.
