I've seen some use La Masia as an excuse for why we are buying so many players pushing 30, but I dont buy that at all. There has been a drought for many years now from La Masia and we have gone for the oldies for a long time now. It's a problem for our long term prospects.

No drought in promoting players from La Masia.

You use words like 'drought' from La Masia and 'so many' pushing 30 when more La Masia/b team players have come through to first team.

Name the players signed in last five years pushing 30.

You say there are 'so many'. How many is that then?

You will probably try to avoid it like avoided the Arda claims but I ask anyway.

There is a drought from La Masia now compared to the past. Who was the last to become a starter? Busi in 2009? We cant be in denial.

We continue to buy almost no one in the 21-24 age range. Regarding the Arda claims, you're just splitting hairs and you know it. 42m for a 29 year old is what it is. I'm done discussing it.

Suarez

Arda
Bravo

And Rakitic will be 28 in a bit over a month

Good players between 21-24 are now very costly .look at Dybala (bought to Juve for 30M) or Pogba or Martial or Marquinhos or Mangala etc .every club now wants the young relatively proven starlet
We have also brought 2 important young players in recent years .Alba (23) & Neymar(21) in addition to MATS (22)
We sign young players ,but we do it with the "unproven" younger levels who would play with Barca B like Halilovic & Suarez .that strategy has started few years ago and it is yet to see its results since most of the signed players are still too young but at least most o those players are now worth more than when we signed them
Also ,as I said b4 we are doing what most big clubs do .sign proven players from our own league .Rakitic /Alba/Vidal/Arda/Mathieu etc. that what most big clubs that is comparable to Barca like Bayern & RM does

Suarez
Mathieu
Vermaelen
Arda
Bravo

Rakitic was 26 when signed ,Suarez was 27 when signed .that isn't pushing 30's by football terms . 2 or years is huge time in football to say that a player is pushing 30 when he is signed 26-28

Yes, but these players are all pushing 30 or in their 30s now. Just like a lot of our other players. We need to start replacing some of our older players soon in order to avoid having to replace most of the team in one go.

At the start of next season our players will be:

Alves (33)
Pique (29)
Mascherano (32)
Vermaelen (30)
Mathieu (32)
Adriano (31)

Busquets (28)
Iniesta (32)
Arda (29)
Rakitic (28)

Messi (29)
Suarez (29)

The 'younger' players will be:

Alba (27)
Vidal (27)
Douglas (lol) (26)
Bartra (25)
Neymar (24)
Sergi Roberto (24)
Rafinha (23)

Young players that might or might not be here:

Denis (22)
Samper (21)
Sandro (21)
Munir (21)
Halilovic (20)

Our main issue is in defense. At the moment Bartra looks set to leave, and Douglas won't be playing. So we're left with 5 30+ players, Piqué who is 29, 27 year old Vidal who we don't know anything about yet and Alba who is 27 and injury prone. In a couple of seasons we will have to have replaced all of them except maybe Piqué, Vidal and Alba.

Atleast one of Mathieu/Adriano/Vermaelen should be sold this summer and replaced by a younger player.

Buying oldies like Mathieu, injury prone players like Vermaelen and average to bad players like Song / Douglas could finish this great cycle.

Regenerating a squaq is a must, right now we are driving on MSN nitro but that will eventually slow.

Too many mistakes / missed oportunities combined with expensive transfers / renewals.

It doesn't make much difference what moves the club makes beyond the starting 11 and the frequently used subs. Both Mathieu and Vermaelen are fine squad players, playing CB, good enough to be #4 or #5 at that position. Barca will probably make another attempt this summer to bring in a CB closer to the quality of the Barca starters. CB depth is not a problem now on this squad.

Mathieu as LB clearly is not good enough, but I think both Sergi Roberto and Adriano are good enough to back up Alba. Sure, the club is light one quality forward, a move will be made this summer.

I see no problem with the age of this squad. No players have declined enough because of age to question their continuing in the squad. Only Iniesta and maybe Alves are old enough to require reduced minutes, and they both have truly excellent backups. There is no reason to have replacements who will be needed in future years rotting on the Barca bench until then, not getting adequate playing time.

Our main targets this summer are a LB and CB.

I just hope we don't spend the whole summer trying to chase an Unattainable CB and end up getting some CB who's not even as good as Mathieu and Verm. For the LB spot we need a good proper Back up for Alba and I hope we don't cheap out on there either.
