He always had Petit or Gilberto Silva alongside him performing the DM task so wtf is he even being considered for?

Sorry but Vieira was not a DM. Vieira was more of a box to box midfield and magnificent offensively. He always had protection alongside with the likes of Petit and Silva, who were the DM's for Arsenal.
