Can I get by speaking English in Barcelona?

When I visited over the summer, anytime I even tried to start a conversation in Spanish (which is pretty poor but I speak a little) they immediately switched straight to English lol.

I hate that. It doesnt just happen in barcelona/catalunya but throughout spain also. My girlfriend is english but speaks fluent spanish as she studied it up to degree level, and everywhere we go in spain, she speaks to a local in spanish and gets a reply in english or even in broken english. Its really knocked her confidence.

The Spanish think they're being friendly when they do it but it isn't good for somebody's linguistic confidence! Personally I like the French attitude of "if you can't speak our language well bad luck".

I find thats how it is here in spain. Not many people have spoken to me in english.
