It's not a lame excuse. It's his team, but he's not able to sort out the tactics in game because he's in the VIP Box and not on the sideline. In game management in a huge deal which we experienced last season when your favorite Barca manager and style of play was getting battered in Roma with Valverde doing nothing to change the tactics. Something even the players pointed out post-game.

Simeone also got knocked out of the CL in the Group Stages last season.
