The truth is that it's very difficult to win away from home in the CL KO rounds. Even at the height of the Messi-Xavi-Iniesta hyper-team, we struggled in these games.

2009: 1-1 vs Lyon, 1-1 vs weak Bayern, 1-1 vs Chelski
2010: 1-1 vs Stuttgart, 2-2 vs Arsenal, 3-1 defeat vs Inter
2011: 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, 1-0 win over Shaktar, 2-0 win over Real Madrid reduced to 10 men.
2012: 3-1 win over Leverkuzen, 0-0 AC Milan, 1-0 defeat to Chelsea
2013: 2-0 defeat to AC Milan, 2-2 draw vs PSG, 4-0 defeat to Bayern
2014: 0-2 win over 10-man City, 1-0 defeat vs Atleti (elimination)
2015: 2-1 win over City, 3-1 win over PSG, 3-2 defeat to Bayern (our best ever season in terms of away CL games)
2016: 2-0 win over Arsenal, 2-0 defeat to Atleti (elimination)
2017: 4-0 defeat to PSG, 3-0 defeat to Juventus
2018: 1-1 vs Chelsea, 3-0 horror-show vs AS Roma
2019: 0-0 vs Lyon, 1-0 win over Man Utd

Edit: If I am not mistaken, this means that during the Messi era, we have had 8 Wins, 7 Draws and 9 Losses. The 8th win of the decade was last night against United.

This is exactly what many neutrals don't understand. They expect peak 2009-12 Barcelona to show up and dominate and win by a large scoreline(something that didn't even happen between 09-12), and when we don't, they say Barca were weak and it's not a good result. All Barcelona fans know this is a very good result away from home in the CL, something we have struggled with for the last 10 years and especially the last 3...

If we are not the most slow old and predictable top club right now i dont know:lol: I dont know how its possible to loose the controll against this manu the whole game. But seeing our midfield its actually easy to answer. There is no way we will win cl with this midfield ever again.

Cant wait the day rakitic and busquets leaving. De jong save us:lol:

After a sleep I’m waking up feeling pretty damn good about this match. Yes if we went more attacking we could have scored more but we have the away goal and clean sheet. Well put them to the sword Tuesday.

I am a Manchester United fan as specified earlier on. However, one thing I know for sure, is that the Barcelona we faced last night was largely inferior to other Barcelona teams. You have Messi, Busquets, Pique and Suarez, but apart from those, it is a side that cannot be compared to the Guardiola years. However, in saying that, I must admit, it looks as though Barca may have changed the way they approach these 1/4 games. Especially against players like Rashford and Lukaku who are really pacey players. I think that if Barcelona had played their normal style, then we would have profited because of the pace we had in attack.

With that being said, in the last 10-15 minutes, Manchester United did try to look for an equalising goal, which was risky for them however, they needed to do something to get themselves back in the match. The only problem was that once Barca had sensed United going to look to score, they then tried to exploit the defence and without Smalling there, I think we might have conceded a couple of more. I think Suarez would be more suited sticking to Smalling like glue to try and get him to commit as many fouls as possible as Smalling (apart from his tackling) is a weak link and commits too many fouls.

Well, we have a win, first win at old trafford ever, and we played like we are used to play this and season before, only thing that is different we take opponents more seriously. This team is finally capable of playing not so attractive football and win. 0 shots on target achieved, suarez scored(i dont care if its registered own goal, its his, busquets and messi goal) we are up to task, finally we are winning without messi pulling all the strings and he can have a day off. I smell treble all over the place

How was their young and inexperienced Scott McTominay able to be arguably the best midfielder on show ??

Not sure about the best midfielder on show, however, he was clearly the best midfielder for Manchester United last night. His performances in the 2nd leg against PSG and now the 1st leg against Barca have proved without a shadow of a doubt that he is clearly a good midfielder. In fact, when you look at the Manchester Evening News ratings for Manchester United, McTominay and Fred got a 7/10 rating whilst Paul Pogba got a 4/10. I watched the entirety of the match and to be honest, the figures are about correct. On other United forums, people are more or less saying the same thing; that McTominay, for all his inexperience had a massive game. Now, for a player who cost nothing to play better than someone who was bought for £90 million, then that speaks volumes for the quality he brings to the team.

He has showed to be calm under pressure with the ball, he can improve his passing game with every match he plays too and he gets stuck in. This is something that I don't see Pogba doing at all. He doesn't play for the club, he doesn't play for the shirt, he doesn't play for the fans, he simply plays for himself. Therein lies the difference. McTominay played tonight as if it was a final in itself and in spite of his team losing, he has taken enormous credit for playing the way he did. There are too many players who give the "big I am", and they come unstuck. McTominay is brilliant for Manchester United. As for the £90 million player, he might as well go to Real Madrid, that is where the mercenaries go and he can do whatever he wants, he does anyway.

+ 1000 Exactly... fans aren't seeing this. An away win in the CL Quarters.. with Messi doing more or less nothing all game other than the cross for the goal, all the team in general played below average, we played Atletico at the weekend while United rested AND we kept United at bay with them having no real chance all game. I only see positives from this... guys wanting beautiful football all the time are living in dream land.

This team is definitely inferior to the awesome team you faced in the 2011 final. There is no question about that. Having said that, last night was probably one of our weakest performances this whole season. Of course it could be argued that United had something to do with that, but if we are being objective, the fact of the matter is that United were playing at home, they were better rested and had no key player missing from what I gather. Next match, these factors will be reversed, plus Dembele will probably fully ready to play. In the game itself, we were slower to every ball, apart from the first and last 15 minutes of the game. I think that Vidal helped our midfield a lot once he came on, with him on the pitch we regained full control of the game. Lots of people (including United fans) tend to underestimate this United team. Yes, it's not by any stretch a vintage side, but after the horror show under Jose, the team has picked up in many respects. Some of our whining fans need to be reminded that this United has beaten lots of big teams this season (PSG, Juventus, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs) United also drew with Liverpool (the team that many in here are terrified of) when they were desperate for 3 points.

To our EV haters. Whatever you may want to believe, and even if you are right about some of those things, you have to acknowledge that for almost 2 seasons under EV, we have only had one genuinely bad result. A monstrously catastrophic result, but an isolated one nevertheless. Beyond that, we have won titles, crushed Real Madrid, ATM, Spurs, Inter, Chelsea, Juventus and have now beaten United away for the first time ever. I would say that these are not bad results, despite our obvious weaknesses.

That was a beautiful goal, Barca at its best.

Man U had a very strong defensive game, you have to give them credit for preventing Barca from advancing the ball.

Barca had to play a lot of defense, but this time the Barca D came up big-time. No Man U shots on goal is incredible.

Messi could not breathe, Dembele was out. It won't go as well for Man U in Camp Nou. Fine away CL result, on our way to the treble.

Wow we are terrible away. I wonder how these records compare with other top teams ? Everyone struggles away games in CL KO stages? or is it just us?
