club V country?

I'm no patriot, much less a proud brit, but it's gotta be country.

there's just something about the world cup. it really is above and beyond.

non-football fans don't give a flying fuck about the champions league, but they care like hell when the world cup is on. that tells you everything about its power.

barca is an interesting situation, though, because it represents catalunya (which actually has historically BEEN a nation, unlike merseyside). so, would barca's catalans pick la seleccion over la blaugrana? I mean... it's an interesting thought.

Cringe.

Ed, you're a greek who hates England but loves the English city of Liverpool.

and yet doesn't live there.

or, indeed, has never lived there.

I've never lived in Greece but I have Greek blood. I have no english blood but I was born in england.

But if you gave me the choice of Greece/England winning the world cup or Liverpool winning the carling cup I'd pick Liverpool winning the carling cup 100 times out of 100.

This is football we are talking about. I could not give a shit about the english national team. I care about the Greek national team, but as I said they are 2nd.

Catalunya doesn't cease to be a nation just because it isn't sovereign anymore, in terms of the selección I know several Catalans who support la roja but they'd never sacrifice Barça's successes to see Spain win a tournament.

I couldn't give a rats arse if they make my countrymen happy or not.

All year long people boo Gerrard for example but come world cup time cheer him.

Me I am not a hypocrite. I boo Rooney in a manc top and I wish him nothing but the worst in an england top. I boo and jeer the mancs, chelsea and spurs players all year long, so I have no right to cheer them for 1 month.

Liverpool is my nation. Liverpool is my blood.

It has nothing to do with hypocrisy, people manage to put club rivalries aside for the sake of national pride and that's something to be lauded. There are England players I dislike severely but I still want them to do well if they're picked by Capello because it's my country and although they play for Chelski, Man Yoo, Liverpool etc. they represent me when they pull on that white shirt with the three lions on the badge.
