Pity Messi didn't score that sitter, because it would be cherry on top and probably the 7th seal. Only watched the highlights, but he seemed to have had one of the bleakest performances for NT ever in this final. Then again, Penaldo was hailed hero for being best cheerleader in '16 so...

He wasn't bad, but there was little space and the pitch was terrible. Also Argentinas tactics have always seemed almost nonexistent to me, no connection between the players...
He did some pretty great things though with the little time he had on the ball. The game suited Di Maria better though, and he looked a bigger threat in that game.

Didn't help that he had an injured hamstring for the final 2 games. He wasn't his usual self in the final but he was very good defensively. He was tracking players and putting in tackles

It's not just that. It's that Argentina was playing too low and he stays up front a bit but it results in no one having to pass to forward. So it usually results in him having to hold the ball long enough for Argentina to start the counter but then will be circled by Brazilians already.
