Had a much smaller role in Real Madrid's CL title compared to his role in Portugal winning the Euro. Practically useless in the second half of 2016.

Ronaldo is tirning into the biggest fraud in the sport and most iverhyped player ever. He is an atg goalscorer and right now a quality poacher but he is not near top 5 players, nowhere near Messi and at all time levels in no way better than the likes of Cruyff.
Luck, his teammates, marketing and his name won him the award this year. Thats at least 2/4 undeserved ballon d'ors and people acting like 5/4 is a realistic portrayal of Messi vs Ronaldo are insane while it should have been 5/6 vs 2 by now.

At this point people automaticly seem to pit Messi and Ronaldo in the top 3 based on reputation. Then compare stats/awards amd unless some player has a goat season its decided like that who will win the ballon d'or.

From 2006-07 to 2013-14 he was the clear best or second player in the world.Especially his 2011-12 and 2007-08 seasons were something that I doubt the likes of Cruyff , Platini had done in their career.

Ronaldo thoroughly deserved it. Messi just wasn't decisive enough in the most important games. Had he showed up in the CL against Atletico & again in the Copa America final shot-out vs. Chile then maybe he would've won. It's funny that everyone lambasted Higuain during that shoot out when Messi the captain stepped up and missed the opening penalty himself. Not to mention that the Copa America is a considerably weaker tournament with less games en route to the final than the Euros. Every team Portugal faced in the KO were considerably better than all the teams present in the Copa America barring Chile. The likes of Croatia, Poland & Wales are much stronger than teams like Mexico, USA etc. So really Messi had it in his hands.

In la liga I'd say they were about equal. Suarez was the primary reason Barca won it and in fact Ronaldo's 2nd half of the season form was better than his and was one of the reasons Real came only within 1 point.

In the CL, Ronaldo was clearly the best player overall despite his substandard showing in the final but the team would never have made it that far if not for his hat-trick against Wolfsburg to overturn a 2 goal deficit from the 1st leg (which was the best individual performance in the tournament last year ). Overall, you could say he had a weak Euros (but was still decisive) and a slow start to the season (coming off a 2 month injury @ 31years old). Other than that anyone can tell me what big games in 2016 Messi was decisive in. He accumulated his stats in easy games like Ronaldo is often criticised for.

He scored/assisted more than 70% of Real Madrid's goals in the CL including the hat-trick against Wolfsburg that enabled them to progress to the semis in a game they had no business winning if he was absent. Sometimes I wonder if people just make things up as they go along.

Imho, Ronaldo at his absolute peak (late 2006 ~ late 2012) is the greatest European player ever or at least top 3.

You sound as though CR didnt play the first leg and miss a one-on-one

CR150 was so amazing in both the CL and Euro final.

CL: Non-existant for 120min and then scored a fantastic penalty. That's clearly world class!

Even better in the Euros when he possessed Eder's body and scored the winner. And his coaching skills! And that amazing motivational speech! The best ever!

Well deserved indeed.

cr the best player in the cl, lmao. Guess scoring lots against smaller teams makes one the best. Talk about falling for hype. Or imagining rm wouldn't be able to beat the mighty Wolfsburg without him, at the bernabeu.

Barça wouldn't had won the double without Messi. He's not only about scoring goals, anyway. He also carried arg to another final, although he missed a critical pk. Still had a much better year than cr, by far.

when you win both CL and Euro in the same year it's a default win regardless the individual performance.

Ballon D'or first, then he'll get Fifa best award, Uefa best player award, Marca's best player, his ego is gonna explode from all these awards.

Except in 2013. Then he won 0 titles, and individual performance was all that mattered. Depends on the year, I guess :lucho2:

Pff, the whole Messi vs Ronaldo debate... Strip away the goals (they each make about the same amount every year anyway), and see what's left.. That about tells you who is better (by a landslide)
