Its a ridiculous ratio. I have seen an image detailing each hat trick and the amount of penalties involved was insane.

Messi 21 hat tricks in la liga , 18 without a penalty. I believe he is on 25 hat tricks now? 3 goals away to Deportivo (No penalty) 3 vs Levante (1 penalty ) 3 vs Rayo (1 penalty ) 3 vs Granada recently ( 0 penalties )
So thats 25 in la liga , 20 without penalties.
That article shows Ronaldo on 23 while I believe he recently hit 29 in la liga. For the first 23 only 8 were without a penalty. His most recent one also had a penalty , I will check hat tricks 24-28.
Number 24 vs Granada he scored 5 goals ( No penalty )
Number 25 vs Sevilla ( No penalty )
Number 26 vs Espanyol ( No penalty )
Number 27 vs Getafe ( 1 penalty )
Number 28 5 goals vs Espnayol ( 1 penalty ) However the other 4 were from open play so we won't count this one.
Also his second hat trick in la liga was 4 goals vs Racing which had a penalty so we won't count that either which gives him 13 hat tricks out of 29 without penalties.

If you went to go further you could check out the stats for the other comps, All time Ronaldo leads 39 vs 36 for club and country, I'll have a quick look and see what I can find.

Ronaldo also had a hat trick for United in the league with no penalties which gives him a total of 8/10 and Messi 7/11. It appears things are more even outside of La liga, still for the total number Messi's percentage is much better.

Goes to show again how many penaldo's Real get in la liga. Its always even in a way except for la liga where Real seem to get way more penalties.

Hope he gets to 50 when his career is over, would be nice 50 hattricks, 700 goals, 300 assist and a shitload of team trophies of course.
Imagine if he actually chased it like Ronaldo when he is on a brace, he could have been at 45+ already by now.

Messi doesn't chase hattricks though, he's more interested in the team not individual glory.
