Cruyff's 3-4-3

I want to play some ridiculous offensive formation in a video game just for kicks... something like 3-2-5

Puyol--Pique--Abidal
----Xavi--Iniesta
Pedro-Messi-Villa-Alexis-Afellay

Sure, against the top teams it'd be suicidal to play 3-4-3. Against 80% of the "lower" La Liga sides it should work though.

you do realise we play a 433/343 hybrid formation, right?

without the ball we look like this:
Valdés
Alves Piqué Puyol Abidal
Xavi Busquets Iniesta
Pedro Messi Villa
and with the ball, we look something like this:
Valdés
Piqué Busquets Puyol
Alves Xavi Iniesta Abidal
Messi
Pedro Villa
our CB's split and Busquets drops back in there, this allows our FB's to push on and provide width high up the pitch. Messi then drops deep to create a vacuum in the CF position, which others (usually Pedro and Villa) fill with well-timed runs.

1) from barcastuff: "Because of the many midfielders in the squad, Guadriola is considering to start with a 3-4-3 line-up in the less important games. [marca]"

2)@meta
this is a different thing.. Agree with your assessment about with and without the ball.. But this is not hybrid.. it happens with all the systems when they team reshapes to attack..
Hybrid systems are the ones you cannot classify them, because they combine characteristics of two different ones at the same time..
the referring system is usually the defensive-phase one.. that's why we play 4-3-3..

3) regarding point one.. If this is true and guardiola is thinking about that, it can be really interesting..
My thoughts:

I dont see playing the 4 in line, but with busquets deeper and just adding cesc or thiago to xaviniesta..

-----------Valdez--------
---Puyol--Pique--Abidal--
----------Sergio-------
----Xavi--Cesc--Iniesta--
Pedro-----Messi------Villa

Something like that.. it can work only in certain and easy games i reckon..
It will feature too much congestion in the center, with messi dropping deeper also..
I dont see alvez fitting in that, cauz he is too attack-minded to play at the back three, and in case the 4 are like i showed and not in line, there is no place for dany..

This system main disadvantage is that despite covering firmly the center, you get wildly exposed on the flanks.. with good modern wingers and full backs roaming upfront, this is insane when facing top teams.. So, i kinda agree with the previous statements..

i would play
----sergi
--xavi---cesc
----iniesta

Iniesta with Messi should get free role as they got against real where they both were mostly attacking... with Cesc and Xavi more natural CM who can hold ball and support our 2X factors - Messi and Iniesta....

Sure, but the 3-4-3 that we're talking about here would rather be a 2-5-3 in possession, and transform to a 4-3-3 in case we lose possession:

With the ball:

Villa - Messi - Sanchis/Pedro - A
Cesc - L
Xavi - Iniesta - V
Busquets - E
Puyol/Abidal - Pique - S

Without the ball, Alves drops back to RB, our DM (Busquets or Mascherano) drops back to CB to form a 4-men defence, and one of our 2 CMs (probably Xavi or Iniesta) drops back to DM.

80% (or maybe more) of our La Liga opponents park the bus and barely threaten us at all, so I think this 2-5-3 would work quite well (and furthermore, it would look extremely sexy).

Anyway, I'm curious what the defence of the 3-4-3 formation of the dream-team looked like. 1 CB (Koeman) and 2 offensive fullbacks (Sergi Barjuan was quite offensive from what I remember, but he only became a regular at the end of the Dream Team era?). Or were it rather 3 CBs?

What did their formation look like without the ball? And with the ball?

I don't think this will change much as you essentially exchange a midfileder for a midfielder. Yes, I know Alvez is the right back but the way he interprets his position he's a midfielder with additional defensive duties. If you really want to add offensive power by going to a 3-4-3 you probably have to keep Puyol out.

i see your point..

But a 3-4-3 with alves at the back 3 can turn suicidical..
when alves is out of position in our current system, he is absent from the back, but players from the left flank cover and everyone shifts right..

Playing with 3 defenders in this modern game is just professional suicide...
