How are you?
I am content and happy that things are finally flowing again, that we've finally dispelled all the doubts from the beginning of the season and that things are now working as usual.
Besides scoring goals and all...
Yes, when things begin to fit together and fall into place, there's even the possibility of scoring. We're very happy about that, it was hard in the beginning because we didn't have a pre-season, and this is not an excuse but a fact. As we pick up the pace and intensity of the game, we find the best version of ourselves.
Are you surprised about the improper line up of Madrid v Cádiz?
Yes, above all because of the lack of communication and information. I think something like this shouldn't happen in a big club like RM. If fair measures must be taken they mist be disqualified according to precedents and the rules. The rule says if you play someone who is suspended you must be eliminated. Therefore there's no valid defense.
Better for Barça that Madrid is disqualified, no?
I don't think it's better for Barça, but it's worse for Madrid, for sure.
Is this Barça comparable to Guardiola's?
No.
Can you keep up this rhythm until the end of the season?
No.
When will we see a drop in form?
Normally we see a drop in January or February. I've been here for some years and it always happens. I hope it doesn't happen this year, but usually around those dates it occurs. But since this year we won't stop for Christmas let's hope it doesn't happen.
You are the player who has defeated Madrid the most, would you like to see them fall to the second division?
No, I don’t hate them that much. A first division without Madrid would lack ‘salsa’ (spice? in english). I like things with salsa, better that they be in la Primera and that we can compete.
Who did you dislike the most, Betis at Sevilla or Madrid at Barça?
It’s not a matter of liking more or less, everything has its good and bad aspects, but without hard feelings. We just compete. There is no hate in my heart. Football is about competing and at the end of the day you have to look out for your interests.
Do you understand Isco’s attitude against Neymar at the Clasico?
I think Isco is one of a few Madrid players I would forgive, because I like him so much I’d forgive anything he does. I think it was an isolated event, sometimes we lose control and it happened to him.
Who is the best player in the world?
Messi is a little above the best. Neymar is the second, because he’s having a great moment. Cristiano doesn’t deserve to be in the top 3. Last year he won it because of his own successes, because he achieved important things. I think the best player in the world must have greater influence in the game, not just score goals; that’s the influence he had last year. People forget it’s a team sport, and to be the best you need to have bigger influence than just scoring goals.
Do you swear you didn’t leave Getafe’s dressing rooms as it was in the pictures?
Yes, I swear, double swear, whatever is necessary.
Is there a campaign of persecution against Barça?
Yes.
From who?
From the Capital, yes, you guys. One thing is making a joke or something fun and another is doing harm (taking it too far). We are not impolite, to do that. Maybe some want to see us having made a mistake, but well, you have to move forward and we didn’t do that. I was one of the last to leave the dressing rooms, and the last one getting dressed up was Adriano and then Neymar. It was okay, not dirty. When I saw the pictures, I said: ‘No way! That’s crazy.’
Why do you keep singing when you’re such a terrible singer?
Because in Brazil there is a saying that says: He who sings, scares his woes away. When I sing, people who don’t like me run away, and see, I scare away the bad. The people who love me and appreciate me a little, even if I sing bad, well they know behind the music there is a message: we have to enjoy life, regardless of the bitter things that happen.
Who chooses your wardrobe?
Me.
Who chooses your hairstyle?
Me.
If you weren’t a footballer, what would you have been?
I would work the field like my father, although I would have liked to be a formula 1 driver.
When you were 6 years old you woke up at 4 am to go to the field with your father..
Yes, but it was more out of admiration than obligation. By 10 maybe it was more out of the obligation, seeing him there suffering and being able to help him, but at that age (6) it was more about the admiration I had for him as a father. I wanted to be like him. We always played together, and that was an experience. I had to grow up when I was very young, and perhaps that’s why I’m a good person.
You filled the walls of your house with autographs..
Yes, it was one of my hobbies. Covering walls, notebooks.. I dreamt of being a person who would sign autographs, and look..
What was it like with the red hair at Sevilla?
I should almost grab Sevilla’s kit man by the hair, he did this to me. It wasn’t to be blonde. Actually, I wanted to go out with the colors red and white, but he put the tint wrong and in the end I came out with the flag of Spain on my head. I didn’t mean to send a message; I send messages with my mouth, not other things.
You must know what happenes with Pique and the emoticons in twitter. You guys have funny reactions on social sites, no?
Of course, because people have fun.
Well, I don’t know if the people at Real Madrid thought it was funny…
It’s the same thing that happens when there’s something from there, when we make a mistake. Normally, when I make a mistake I receive a bunch of things like that. People laugh at me, at my mistakes and my things. Well, when it’s the other way around, happy, no?
You are used to being criticized and doing things without thinking about it, no?
Exactly. I don’t live thinking about how well or not people will like me; if not, I’d barely live. If my things are taken well or not is my problem. I’m not about ‘sending messages’(sorry idk the best translation), if I have to say something, I’ll do it and that’s it.
You will have done 8 seasons at Barça…
I always try to make my relations long and victorious. Then, when you feel content, you begin to obtain things, and you see that things don’t end there, you become more motivated. I think I’m in the perfect club. People want things and want to win more. I identify with this club because of the desire for victory.
You don’t see yourself out of Barça in a few years, no?
I dont think about that much.
This summer you said you wouldnt stay at Barça. What changed?
When I said I wouldn’t stay at Barça, it wasn’t my decision. My contract was ending and no one was trying to reach an agreement with me, they didn’t make me think I’d stay here longer. Despite that, I played my cards, which is to trust in my labor, in my possibilities. And here I am..
The day that you celebrated the titles and people chanted your name.. That day did you see yourself more outside than inside or did you know you were going to stay?
The next day I was on a plane to do something else.
Paris?
No.
London?
No.
Munich?
No, you’re on the wrong track. I had a big commitment. From the day the celebrations began, I said: ‘If something strange doesn’t happen, my days are numbered here.’ I am not a hypocrite. I know in football we are pieces, objects, and we are used while we can help. And I felt that the club, or the people of the club, were pushing me outside because they thought I couldn’t give more, but those things motivate me. I am thankful everyday for the people who don’t like me and speak ill of me, because thanks to them I am better every day.
You’re fantastic right now.
I’m okay. And I want us to be fantastic to the end.
Messi shouldn’t leave his home, no? Because the kids if you spend too little time with them accuse him.
When his child sees the history of his father he will be thankful that he left home on wednesday, or tuesday, saturday or sunday to ‘go to goal’(the cute way his son calls it). Because when one does the thing one loves, one does it thinking of what is best for those around one. My sons think the same, but they are older and beginning to understand.
Most people/what is normal is to support Espanyol or Real Madrid, no?
Yes, that is what is normal. Being for Barça is abnormal. That’s why we are Barça, because we don’t like being normal, being normal is boring.
Do you think this season you can achieve what you did with Guardiola?
The same or more. Well, more is impossible. It’s different concepts. Pep did the revolution, for good, and Luis Enrique gave it continuity, with a different play style. Maybe because before we were predictable and now less so.
Do you understand people whistling at Pique?
No, well, I do and I don’t, depends on how you look at it. I will say this not to criticize Geri, because we all do what comes to us, but if I defend one concept, I don’t defend another. It usually happens, because he defends a concept but does a different thing. Then people get angry. But Geri has a lot of personality and that’s why he does it. He never hides, and if he thinks he must do something, he does it regardless of what people think.
Who leads the singing in the dressing room? Who sets the music?
I set the music, I have better rhythm.
You’d be good in Cadiz’s carnavals, no?
Sure, with the jokes..
And given what happened yesterday, more, no?
Sure, maybe..
The king of the carnavals was Ronaldo (Nazario)
Ronaldinho and Ronaldo were the kings, and kings cannot be dethroned.
You are supporting an initiative from the Special Olympics…
I don’t like to speak about that, because I do it for my own reasons and not for anyone to like me. It’s an initiative to encourage people to practice sports and not feel discriminated. So that within their conditions and qualities they have fun and feel important.
Would you like to send a message to the Manolos?
I see them now and then. Keep doing what you do, because you are like us. They give a little banter, although they’re from Madrid.
Are you sure?
If they’re not from Real Madrid, they do it for interests. And if not because they are employees and must obey orders from above. Because of that they are forgiven, because like me, they are instruments/tools.
