I think he is. I've watched him from his Atletico days to the time he joined ManU until now, and while I think he's overhyped. He's a good keeper, in fact a very good keeper, but he's caught on some that English hype and right now I think him to be overrated.
I disagree about Casillas. Always felt he was also vastly overrated by the Madrid media machine. He was given this angelic aura of savior that IMO he never warranted.
Just like De Gea now, Casillas was capable of that outstanding reflection save that left people going crazy, and sold papers, but quietly, he let in goals that he should have saved. They're also both weak in the air.
I think De Gea will be a most fitting Casillas replacement for RM.
I watched him during the Atlético days (he was already highly rated back then but was kind of forgotten due to Courtois's great performances after his departure) but he is a totally different goalkeeper now.
One always has to be cautious about the overhyping of EPL players but in this case I think that the praise is deserved.
Well, we have to disagree then. I can't personally remember how many times Casillas has saved RM. There are simply too many examples. I feel that people's view of his career and his legacy has been hampered by his 2 past seasons. People tend to forget that Casillas was limited to playing in the CdR and the CL last season. Ironically RM won both tournaments while they lost the league where the goalkeeper was Diego López.
I kindly disagree completely in regards to Casillas. Of course every goalkeeper commits mistakes but in my eyes there is no doubt that Casillas has done more good for RM as a club and saved their asses many times more than he has failed them.
De Gea is actually not particularly weak in the air anymore. I am sure that the Man Utd fans will confirm that here and most objective EPL fans.
Well who could they otherwise have bought as a better replacement?
Neuer is going nowhere, ter Stegen neither, Courtois neither. Cech maybe but he is 33 years old and has probably seen better days. I think that De Gea is an excellent buy.
No I've always felt Casillas was overhyped, not just now that he's declined. I saw him make great reflex saves and be hailed for them, but that buried all the mistakes and goals he let pass. Problem is now his reflexes are gone, and you notice more all the mistakes he makes.
Casillas has also always been horrible through the air. Very poor at going to get crosses and punching away balls. I feel De Gea is very similar in style, a bit taller so slightly better through the air, but that, just like Casillas, is his weakness. He's also a reflex type of keeper that makes some awesome saves, but lets in other easy ones.
In any case, I'm not claiming Casillas was a bad keeper not that De Gea is one now. They are both excellent keeper and RM will do well to get De Gea, I just still think they are both overhyped. I'm really not worried as a Barca fan.
Fair enough. We have to agree to disagree here then.
In the current market I can't spot a goalkeeper that RM can realistically buy that is currently as good as De Gea, as young and with such a big potential.
I am not particularly worried either. I mean a really good goalkeeper can win you games but the goalkeeping position won't be decisive in our rivalry with RM next season. Especially not considering our almost faultless current duo of goalkeepers.
What I do believe though is that he will be an improvement on the current Casillas if he moves this summer which seems very likely as of now.
So in a sense I am not exactly worried but I would prefer if RM bought somebody else or sticked with Casillas for another season along with Keylor.
De Gea is one of the top 5 goalies for the future, and already a top10 in the moment, maybe.
Real is signing the right guys for the right places, we better take care next year if they land Klopp.
Just keep him for the year. Let them buy someone else or stick with Casillas, fuck them.
