Emerson

Impossible to go into season with an idea like that.

The player who is in better form and giving more to team should start vast majority of time. Simple.

Not when you have 2 players who offer different things and are similar in value. It's not like Emerson is Dani Alves. Is maybe marginally better than Dest.

Might as well sell Dest or not buy him in the first place if you don't plan on giving him time to grow. It was obvious he would be a medium-term project and was raw at Ajax.

Of course, if Emerson impresses everybody and produces top-notch stuff, given he's young as well, will make the position his. But we've seen Emerson, and he's not that good as to do that.

It wont happen and it will be based on performance. If not much in it then that may lead to similar minutes.

Planning to give 50/50 regardless would do nothing but hurt team.

I am not even sure that Dest is superior to him in attack and buildup. Better player should get the most minutes. Pretty simple.

I'm not convinced Emerson is that much of a more reliable defender either tbh. The point is if Emerson doesn't impress, Dest should get a good share of minutes. I think everyone can agree with that. Same goes the other way.

Dest is at a disadvantage because Koeman as a manager is more towards the physical types and Emerson is more his cup of tea. I hope we won't see another player getting frozen on the bench while another one is overplayed into exhaustion as the season progresses. That's all. That surely doesn't help anyone. The squad should be used better than last season.

That goes without saying. But if one of them is clearly better then he should and will get his ~3k minutes in the League.

Koeman is not showing to be preferring 'physical' types.

He wanted Dest at club and gave a 17 year old Pedri central point in team. Can barely think of one physical player that was chosen for that reason last season. If anything team lacked it.

Pedri played a lot but was not exaughsted and Ilaix came in and played towards end of season.

Puig didnt play more as Koeman clearly doesnt rate him at this point.

Will be very interesting to see how the RB-situation pans out. From what I've seen (not a lot) so far, Emerson is not typically "Brazilian" going forward, but very solid defensively. He's also rather tall and physically strong, which might help defending standards.

Dest is still very young, but after showing promising signs early on I'm not impressed by anything he showed in 2021. For a player whose forte is going forward, he offered very little and was toothless considering Koeman very often played him as a wingback, being freed from doing as much defensively as he'd have as a right back.

On paper Alba and Emerson might be the more balanced full-back - pair. However, I don't think Dest has a disadvantage because Koeman prefers physical players. Dest was pretty much Koeman's one and only signing last summer, one the coach was demanding strongly.

Our biggest problem next season will be how to build a strong team defensively. It's been our weakness for a long time now.

Happy to have someone who can defend for once..

We have enough offense as it is.

and its not as if dest is some attacking beast. when he is not stumbling into the opposing defender, he passes sideways or back. no crosses or genuine threat from him.

if emerson at least solidifies the defense, it would be an upgrade.

Love the enthusiasm and showing up in a tux to sign his contract, clearly the Brasilian is thrilled to be at the club and that bodes well. Moreover, being able to challenge Dest will hopefully have a positive effect on both of their developments in the squad

He even learned a sentence in catalan

Generally I am very happy with our RB situation. I don't think there's more we could have done.
