Ernesto Valverde: An Analysis of his tenure

Lucho doesn't exist past 2015, in the alternate universe of Barcelona.

I don't think he choked in 2016 though. The loss vs Atletico was pretty shocking for Barca fans, of course. We had so many chances and were wrongly denied a penalty in the second leg. It was close series vs Prime Atletico. No shame in that imo.

Since 2017.. Shite. we didn't learn our lesson and kept the same players. Huge mistake.

i think in 2016 we were still the best team in the world but needed more subs/players ran out of steam.

I took Simeone until November 2020 to beat us in the league. Doesn't that say a lot?
If you think about the goals we concede in CL, 95% of them are crap, avoidable, and the same players are culpable.
It also tells us that you have to do something different to win those games. The defence has to be solid and not make stupid decisions, and the midfield has to have an impact and do what they do best.

I still say the downfall started from 4-0 loss vs PSG(We got totally crushed), BUT because we beat them 6-1 next match it was forgotten. That was the moment we should have started changing things. It was starting to collapse.

We were supposed to retool that summer, that was the original plan.
We have 3 youngish player in Neymar, Umtiti & MATS who are world class, we will get 4th one in Verratti and we get a young talented RB in Semedo (lol) and the new era is upon us. Alba was just 28, oldest player of the remaining core was judt 30 as Verratti was coming to replace Iniesta and Mascherano was already on the bench.
Oh, and that along the young bench players of Denis, Rafinha, Gomes, Paco and Deulofue to provide some youth.

Then Neymar left, we replaced him with 3 expensive flops that cost us double the money. Verratti never came, Umtiti knees was shot after 1 year or even less, MATS proved to be CL choker
Board asked the coach to win at any cost because the board didn't want to face the crisis but deflect it.
At the end we pay the price for Bartomeu, Robert & Abidal incompetence, Bartou inability to understand football or face troubles.
Some folks wanted a guy like EV to be a warrior and demand rebuild or quit, which is fairytale type of stuff. He did what was asked from him and won to the full potential of that awfully constructed team.

We failed pretty much every single transfer for what, 7 years and counting at this point?

Flop after flop, even the okay-ish ones were at best financially +/-0 with limited to no use, and no one could be established as a long-term starter. Then of course the holy trinity of flops was the killer blow for the team and finances.

Yeah 16-17 was the turning point, couldnt even beat PSG (6-1 was a lot of luck) or Juve. MSN was still top but we should have bought new midfield players. That Neymar left us hurt us even more.

Yup, what hurts more is the fact that the situation was still salvageable till last normal summer in 2019.
Had we stick to original plan, signed Mendy (the LB) and De Ligt instead of Griezmann and Firop, saved some money along the way, got a better GK than Neto.
We would still have a far better situation than current one, like day and night difference.
But no, they choose the wrong choice till the last moment, one after another :banghead:
Lucho and EV weren't the blame there, no coach can out do an awful SD and president. That isn't denying they had their shortcomings

True, the board has to have the biggest blame.

Yeah Griezmann was probably the final nail in the coffin. Pedri and Araujo were the only truly successful transfers pretty much since Suarez, 2 young prospects out of idk probably 50 transfers. Well Umtiti was unfortunate, but it's not like that makes it much better

Will take a long time to recover, even if we had more money. The complete lack of mid 20s quality players is tragic.

His football isn r even bad

Poch was known for beautiful football at spurs but st PSG he's playing like a terrorist

That's with a more mobile Neymar and Mbappe with workhorse verrati and wijnaldum.

Imagine any other than Valverde with Messi and Suarez up front

We would lose 8-2 to Bayern lol
