Ernesto Valverde - V1

Sounds more like he plans on returning the False-9.

Mistake to go back to that. It worked for a while as much as anything as Messi had Xavi and Iniesta to drop deeper and tie teams in knots.

Teams became wiser how to defend against it and greatest midfield ever is gone. Just cant see why he would go back to it.

Thanx for the quoteds xXKonan.

He said he will adapt to 4-3-3 and then later says Messi plays too far on the wing.
Confusing.

Nah, this is taken out of context. He differentiated between Barcelona-style and system. He said he is the one who needs to adapt, not Barcelona. What he meant by it was that he has adapt to the offensive attacking style, strong midfield etc. He also said Lucho played Barcelona-style, but in his on way.
System is a different story. He praised the 4-3-3, but he didn't really say that he will use it. Given his quotes about bringing back a dominant midfield and moving Messi to the middle could suggest that he prefers the 4-2-3-1. He also made a hint that he will use different systems.

4-2-3-1 can be considered a form of 4-3-3. At least that is what I think about it

I didn't understand what did he mean with 'Messi plays too far wide'. He doesn't play wide enough imo.

I think it's a comment about Messi drifting to the center. He starts too wide right now, leaving a gap when he moves inside. So start Messi more centrally and have someone else cover the RW.

But that probably doesn't take into account how fluid football really is.

He probably doesn't share your opinion and i don't either, Messi can play on the wing off course but he's even better in the centre or in a free role (close too or behind Suarez).

Quotes could be taken out of context or lost in translation. Regardless I don't think Valverde will be even remotely set on anything tactically before he trains with the squad. He's expected to answer questions like these in his first presser but the statements can't and don't mean much until he actually meets with all the players and gets a solid grasp on how they function best. Surely he'll speak to Messi about his role in relation to the formation Valverde wants and the starting players he intends to play; and that conversation will have far more of an impact on where/how Messi plays than any preliminary quotes from Ernesto.

If he comes here will we go with 4-2-3-1 formation? That is more suited to teams like Athletic who rely on heavy pressing game. Our style generally is a possession first, not a direct style which will be needed for 4-2-3-1, also that formation best goes with a target man and a plenty of crosses like Adruiz at Athletic. That kind of thing is not possible at Barca, with MSN at top. I am really interested to see what formation he will use. But if he does end up using 4-2-3-1 we need to sign a winger.

I think that formation could work well with the right signings.

Suarez as striker

Neymar on left, Messi playing central attaching role, Sign Dybala, or DiMaria type to play on left.

Busquets and Inesta holding mids with Macherano rotating in to provide rest when needed. He has been fantastic in that role for Argentina in the past.

In the back Alba,Umititi, Pique and sign Bellerin from Arsenal

It would be tough keeping the ball from Messi in this position and he would solve the ball control problems we are having in the midfield. I think he would score more playing centrally than playing on the outside as a forward. His late runs when the wingbacks get upfield and cross in would be a nightmare to mark.

Going away from a 4-3-3 is unlikely IMO.

Forgive the spelling errors.

Maybe he has in his mind something like the 2011 trio from Pep's days. That trio looked extremely different than the 2009 trio. Villa and Pedro weren't wingers, they played more inside and cleared the wings so that fullbacks can make runs in space, behind the defence (check Alves' goal vs Shakhtar on Camp Nou). They were more like forwards, often activating very close to the box like in a 2 striker system. This resulted in a more central game from us, as opposed to the style from 2008-09 when we built more on the wings and looked quite similar to Lucho's 14-15 Barca (with Eto'o as Suarez, and Henry as Neymar).

Valverde could have in mind something like this, which can work great imo if used properly.

It's a 4-3-1-2, with Messi in a role similar to the false 9 role under Pep. Playing between the attacking line, and the midfield line, looking for openings. Neymar and Suarez playing as wide forwards, not wingers. The empty space resulted on the wings, as the opponent closes down our wide forwards, is claimed by our fullbacks, who either stand in space (often in the same line with our forwards), or make runs into it from midfield positions.

I think we will play like that. It gives us midfield control and attacking power. Also, it fully uses Messi.

But I think that fullbacks will not be that high, Valverde wants to strenghten defence.

I didn't like that he said the squad only needs some slight modification, and he didn't want a revolution... In my opinion a revolution is what is needed, but let's wait until the signings come...

No coach is going to say that in his very first press conference.

But even I don't think a revolution is needed. These things can be done gradually if they're smart, however we absolutely need a new starting RB and arguably two midfielders, a CM and an AM + sell the players that don't add value to the team from the bench or as starters.

Next season, we might have a look at a new LB, CB and a luxury RW/LW/AM signing in Ousmane Dembele.

Pep did...

I mean, I think that saying something more drastic would at least get players on their toes knowing that they could be out, or give some sense of authority... I know he's a calm guy, but I feel he's overwhelmed and asking for permission on things that he shouldn't... Obviously, it's still too early to tell and hopefully it's just the bitterness of last season talking, he's been coach for 2 days, hahaha...
