On 1 September 2001 England beat Germany in Munich 5-1. The present German team is as poor as any since 2001. England deservedly won. But were poor until they scored. Southgate sets them up to be difficult to score against. Aims for the clean sheet, and believes that at some time during the game, they will break and score.
The balance is not right in last nights team. Sterling is looking for support. He is use to the short inter passing. He seeks the give and go, without which he runs into blind alleys. Marked by two, he then loses possession. He wants the 1-2 to give, run into the box and receive.
Shaw eventually pushed up and supported him, but Rice does not know whether to stick and twist. To see Sterling turning and pleading for Rice and Shaw to press with him, is unreal.
Saka is a great player, but play Foden. Keep Phillips but the question for me is Rice.
England have one ingredient that they have lacked in tournaments - luck. When Mueller missed, luck was with England. England need to fine tune, it is as if they are playing with 10 men, but a few small changes and they play with 12. Pickford has been great - surprisingly. Stones, Macguire and Walker solid.
But their luck needs to hold. Favourites to win it ? The momentum is with Italy.
