European Super League

Fair enough.

Best to move back to the Super League proposal.

The PL updated their charter that their teams can't join "illegal" competitions in 2022. And being under British Law and not EU, we all know that the colonialists will only protect their interests first. But hey, atleast we might get a team from Rwanda in the Premier League some day.

Anyways, I am trying to model how a Super League format would work in say 15-20 years time. And it still doesn't stop a very valid problem. That is, the Star League (such a shit name) runs the very real risk of having the majority of those teams end up being from the most financially doped league. Be it Spain, Italy or more than likely, England if they are still in it.

In first season yes but then 1, 2 or more of those teams could be relegated and replaced by teams from Switzerland or Croatia for example. But important question here is would teams from those countries have better chances to compete and earn money than they have now in CL (very likely).

I quite like the format mentioned in Marca but will obviously need to learn more about the whole thing. Hopefully they'll come out with more details now and we'll also get a better idea of which teams (leagues) have at least shown interest to join.

I don't think Perez would be totally unprepared for the second time so he surely had lot of negotiations behind the scenes over the past two years.

I also think IF they would come out with this current proposal back in 2021 ESL would already be a reality by now.

I think a key point is how many teams relegate from the lowest league in the pyramid.

There are 4 leagues of 8, so if it is each team that finishes bottom that would be 4 teams relegated per season out of the Super League structure.

So from the whole of Europe excluding the 60 teams already inside the competition you would have only 4 new teams enabled new entrance- which seems incredibly low.

So if we go from the example of the Super League starting next season, how would Girona qualify for one of those 4 slots? Or Bologna?

It seems that they would have to go through a quite strenious qualifying system. But on the bonus side, once they are inside they have a good chance of staying inside and advancing through the pyramid which may bring more stabile club investment strategies outside of the UK.

Now the other positive is that it would start with 64 teams while the new CL is 36 teams, so atleast initially there will be more slots available for clubs in Europe to enter and earn. But the question is how it will work with promotion/relegation in coming years and if after the system for 20 years that we end up with the whole structure full of English/Spanish/Italian teams and an even more unbalanced monopoly than what we are seeing right now.

I'm rambling here a bit, so advance a little in advance for these walls of text.

But a potential advantage of a Super League setup is that it opens up the chances of clubs (ie investors) breaking up the hegemony in European football and invest in untapped markets.

For example someone could invest in Bohemian FC of Dublin in Northern Ireland, and through the Super League system, have a major club realistically become a mainstay in the league hosting an Irish superclub. A city with huge GDP in Europe but without a league system to make it financially viable to otherwise host a top club football side.

Same goes for bigger heritage clubs which were harmed with Bosman and comparatively diminishing right sales like Ajax, Red Star and Copenhagen.

That was just the legal part to show UEFA they are not monopoly.

Barca and Real now have to sell the idea, attract all the rest big clubs that the project is way more profitable than Champions League and the other competitions.

That huge bonus for keeping alive the project is peak capitalism.:papaperez::boss:

I wouldn't mind it tbh. This is just a CL/CL replacement.

What are the cons? That it will take time for a club to get into the Star League?
Domestic football will mostly be the same. Although clubs already in Star League can finish 2nd or 10th without missing out on anything.

@Sterlingfan2000 out there partying right now btw

The current ruling should allow clubs to support and "join" the SuperLeague without fear of repercussion. It will be interesting to see if they can recruit any allies over the current months. Juventus for example.

This sounds like enough cons tbh, clubs like Liverpool when Klopp took over, or BVB when he also took over, or Atletico under Simeone, they won't reach a CL/SL final by the time they peaked. It will also take some from league excitements, most clubs in big leagues won't care that much about domestic league with no qualification spots needed, this would kill the leagues. Currently half the spots means something (first is champions, next 3 are CL spots, 5-7 for EL/ECL and last 3 for relegation)

They should have just took the middle man out initially and kept it the same, then make changes later.
This is still too drastic for fans IMO. And give governments reasons to interfere
