Fernando Torres Vs David Villa

In 2009-10, Villa scored 21 goals in 32 appearances, and Torres 18 goals in 22 appearances. That's a .65 per match for Villa and .82 for Torres if my calculations are correct. Torres would surely have scored more goals than Villa this past season if he had not been sidelined by injury. Not trying to argue that Torres is better (in fact the season before that Villa did significantly better than Torres when it came to goals per game ratio I believe, and then the year before that Torres was better again so it fluctuates) but just stating that I'm almost positive that Torres would have surpassed Villa in 2009-10 if he had played as many games.

Torres's relatively superior ratio prior to his injury don't make it a certainty of the same for the remaining matches. Its difficult maintaining consistency over the course of a season more so for a striker. There is hardly any player who scores every week. Doesn't happen even to the likes of Messi, Eto'o, Villa etc. Goals usually come in spurts for a striker wherein he scores in plenty, suffers a drought and then picks up again or don't. So you've to factor in the dip in form, nature of the opposition, fatigue, service and assistance recieved from teammates etc which varies over a season. What i'm essentially trying to say is tht although Torres scored at 0.82 for a certain period, there is no guarantee or can't be "sure" tht he would 've scored at the same rate or surpassed Villa over an entire season. If you see, Villa has missed 6 league games, i could just as well 've predicted hatricks for him in each game taking his tally beyond Torres for the season. ;) You get my point? Basically, only thing you can be sure in football is wht has transpired or tht which is in front of you. All these IFs and BUTs amt to nothing. Theres no certainty of the future or tht which is yet to materialise.
From the current stats, Torres has better goals/game ratio than Villa for the season. In an event both had stayed fit and played a full season, we'd not know the exact outcome.

You're right, you can't predict things that did not happen. But I'm saying that there is all likelihood that he could have based on the form of both players at the time (both fantastic players but the ratios are speaking here). Yes there could be curveballs like Villa could have scored hat tricks in every match that he missed, and Torres could have gotten zero support from his team and thus not scored at all, but the way things were swinging last season the odds were probably in Torres' favor.

Next season my prediction is that Villa will surpass Torres, because of both form (we can see this in the WC and if Torres doesn't get fit soon that could be a huge problem) and that Villa, with his Barca teammates, will have better support than Torres (this is assuming that Torres stays at Liverpool). But that's just my prediction and other things could happen too that could change everything. Predictions are all just in good fun really.

or

when torres is unfit: Villa >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Torres

when torres is fit: Villa > Torres

but torres can head the ball better, and is much stronger too. and he will always have those two things over villa, for sure.

when he's fit, that is.

I'm with zanela, this thread is jokes.

When both are at their club form best, to me they're both top 5 strikers in the world.

I think Torres stats suffered alot last season because of injuries and lack of support. Last season really crystallized just how much Liverpool missed Alonso. And then when he would get injured they kept rushing him back and never let him properly recover. But as we could all see, Benitez was desperate and did what he thought he could but it was too little too late. An unfit player no matter how good can't carry a team alone. And sadly Liverpool didn't make Champions League, had to settle for Europa League instead.

Villa was amazing for Valencia as always but last season his stats did drop a bit, especially towards the end of the season. I personally feel(And this is just my personal opinion) that alot of it had to do with Villa just not having his heart into the cause anymore. He wanted to come to Barca last season and he was denied. Like a true pro, he didn't make a circus out of it all and just respected the club's decision, but you could see it in him that he had his heart set somewhere else and plus his mind on South Africa.

Torres however was amazing in 07-08 and had it not been for Ronaldo's ridiculous season, would have won the scoring title. That year I thought he was the best striker in the EPL and I wouldn't put it past him to find that form again.

Villa was amazing for Valencia in 05-06 and in 08-09. He played with a good cast too. Players like Silva, Mata, Vicente(When he was healthy supplied alot of goals for Villa), Pablo, Banega, were all good, but maybe not quite the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Deco, Ronaldinho. Imagine how many goals per season he would get with this guys supplying the passes.

Villa's a little more consistent overall. But I think the partnership for La Roja is perfect because its like a ying and yang. It didn't work too much this past World Cup but we all know why. At the end of the day, both are great players.
