Not exactly sure what the reasoning was behind this signing... The most reasonable conclusion was "he was only 2-3 million".
With that as a given, I see why we need a midfielder...just don't see why him necessarily. We were said to be offered Ozil for 11-12 million, but we declined him. I assumed this was b/c Pep had faith in Thiago to become our next attacking-minded midfielder. The signing of Afellay just makes things look worse for Thiago, who has been very decent for us when he has came on. And apparently we could spend 9million for Adriano...why was Ozil overlooked for a couple of million more givin his form and age? Adriano can literally play everywhere but he primarily was brought in to cover for Alves....I think I've seen him played as RB once this season. I guess 9 million was well spent for "in case" Alves gets hurt.
And what about Fabregas? All this hoohah all summer long and now we're bringing in another midfielder? I'm not a huge fan of Keita although I appreciate his work ethic, I'd like to see him go soon. If anything Mascherano seems like the choice to fill Keita's longterm spot and Afellay (25) as the AM/winger option.
I guess what I'm saying is, things look bad for Thiago and I guess JDS if you even still consider him an option. Cesc could still be brought in but that is with the strict assumption that Xavi is 30 and is on his way down...despite he's been brilliant this season although he's had that achilles heel problem nagging him.
I hope Afellay turns out good now that he's here, but our midfield seems to be getting a little congested. He seems great on youtube but I honestly have never seen him play in Holland and only a little in the WC.
Our worst position is our defense, I wonder why Pep is neglecting the fact that Puyol/Abidal/Milito are all old and Milito is injury prone. Not to mention we shipped off Marquez/Chyg this summer with no replacements. He either has a lot of confidence in Fontas (who I like a lot btw) or is hiding a very well kept secret.
