Icons are not made just by winning trophies. Their persona, image and virtues make them icons too. Let's not forget Iker is/was captain of Spain during the national team's most historic period and is basically the face of Real Madrid bar CR7 IMO, being such a long term player in club where the famous come and go. To put a player of his stature down is just plain disrespectful.

Well it has alot to do with his NT performances too. IMO he saved Spain countless times in clinching 1-0 wins at biggest level of World and Europe and will always be remembered as a key, crucial player in Spain's NT historic success which even Der Kaiser's famous squad couldn't achieve.

The lack of appreciation for Valdes because of his mistakes that stems from his requirement to play a libro from Cules is the reason he is leaving. Xavi came out and said that the undue criticism made him leave. So yes, I do agree with you that he is not an Icon to the club because the fans have not appreciated him as such, but make no mistake, there will be a massive vortex when he leaves, and only then people will realize the magnitutde of his...icon.

For every genius goal Messi has scored, I am sure you can find an equal brilliant save Valdes did to keep you in the game. He has been through the best and worst, and the only reason he isn't your first captain is because Puyol wouldn't pass on the torch.
