Players pressed to high up and give the ball away carelessly, Pique doing a piss poor job of reading the pass when he only has one man to mark, and Vidal being nowhere to be found any time the defense was pressured.

i disagree with all that .. Not a good performance but he was far away from a disaster. No major fuck ups of his part. and did as hard as he could because he has to defend that right side..

So typical Rakitic performance... Doesn't fuck up, doesn't create anything. We used to be known for our midfield, and now we have to be happy with such players. Sigh.

I will put try a simple graphic:
Our midfiel under Lucho:

--- Ini -- too much space -- Raki ---
------------------------------------
--------------- Busi --------------

Our midfield now:
- free space - Iniesta - Raki - free space -
-----------------------------------------
---------------- Busi --------------------

In short, under Lucho, Iniesta and Raki played far one from another.
And it was easy to counter us THROUGH the middle.

Now, when they re playing closer, we don't have any width in attack and we have Messi, Suarez, Iniesta, Rakitic, Busi all playing crowded together in one small area.
On the other hand, when we lose the ball, we have 5 players in the middle and TONS of free space down the flanks.

Look at the video with Real's 2nd and 3rd goal:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aW1Lyl6tvqg
-- basically, an opponent can do whatever they want, since all players are in the middle and 70-80% of a field (except a middle) is almost without any of our players

Our current formation:
LW --------------- Cf -----------------
---------------- Messi -----------------
-------------- Ini ---- Raki -------------
----------------------------------------
------------------ Busi -----------------

We have zero width.
And we'll probably play through the middle over and over, and a parked bus will stop us easily, while we will be prone to 100s of counters.

well.. There are worse playing with the team. not one, not two .. Literally a list of midfielders with whom i would be happy if they did but not fucking up.

Sadly that's what we have come to. Hopefully we can get Coutinho for that LCM spot, and play whoever is most in form in RCM.

That last formation made me laugh. Sad but true

Great analysis, I totally agree. I'd rather have this than what we had last year, but when your RB is Vidal, you're always gonna get fucked down the flanks. I still think a compact midfield is the way to go though, we just need a better RB.

EDIT: I'm talking about the defensive aspect btw, obviously your midfield shouldn't be compact when attacking.

I honestly don't believe even Paulinho could have been worse than Rakitic tonight.

Vidal and Pique are getting grilled, rightfully so, but Rakitic was just as shambolic if not more.

Well, Paulinho can run, but he cannot control the ball too well, isn't creative and only got a reputation of having a good shot since he shoots so much like Cristiano.

So he would have been able to run which Rakitic cannot do anymore it seems, but still not a solution unfortunately.

It's a sad situation. The cycle have well and truly ended and unless something is done about it, this team will become Milan when Messi retires, if he doesn't grow tired and leaves before that.
