Cancelo's form has dropped off a cliff, mainly because he has more defensive responsibility this year.

The two consecutive seasons he made PFA team of the year, he was very much an LW, vast majority of his great performances were his attacking contributions and floating between the LW and number 8.

With the introduction of Haaland, there's one less midfielder and with that one less defender with a licence to roam forward, now he's been restricted to a more traditional LB role, where he's just nowhere near as effective.

Balde has played well enough to be considered a long term prospect at LB for us. It makes no sense to bring in a LB, given we have extended Alonso and Alba will refuse to leave due to his bloated salary here. Cancelo would be a great option at RB, when we don't want to play with a defensive set up using Araujo or Kounde as RB. The issue is he's too good and young to agree to that role in the team, making us an unappealing option to him.

I prefer a defensive RB if we are using an attacking LB while Busquets is unfortunately still our DM, he leaves us too exposed and two attacking minded fullbacks just adds gasoline to the fire.

If we could get a proper DM, then playing Cancelo and Balde could work, with them being disciplined so only one pushes up into attack at a time or depending on which side we want to expose.
