Evra was the best left back in the world, those days are long gone though and he has vastly gone downhill quite amazingly last season. His best days are behind him.

I personally think, of the left backs in the premier league, only Cole, Baines and Evra are better and I suspect Enrique will surpass Evra next season in terms of ability and in terms of utilising his ability.

However Baines and Cole are clearly superior imo. I think the poster who said Baines was rubbish defensively has grossly misjudged Baines. Baines imo is the best left back in the league and is the complete package. Were Baines playing for Chelsea and Cole for Everton then I suspect Baines would be a shoe in, in the england team.

Enrique is a very good left back but he isn't world class and probably may never be world class, but he would be an upgrade for us definitely. I just hope we can get the deal sorted asap.

we tried for José Ángel, that much is certain.

anyway, I like José Enrique. I think he's a fine player and is a massive upgrade for Liverpool at LB. but like Ed himself says, he's not world-class and he never will be. Marcelo and Baines had better seasons, so did Alvaro Pereira. Cashley and Evra were worse, but it remains to be seen whether that was just poor form brought on by fatigue (both played virtually every game for club & country for years on the spin), or whether they've begun their decline.

Tbh I didn't really watch many Chelsea games, but I don't think he was that good.

It was way more than 1 game Ashley Cole got mugged last season. It was many many games!

He was awful defensively last season, and last time I checked a left back is a defender and that is what they are paid to do right? Defend? he was kahk.

Newcastle vs Chelsea at St. James Park, Wayne Routledge absolutely DESTROYED Ashley Cole. Every single time Routldge was 1 vs 1 with Cole, he massacared him. And Routledge is a great Championship player and Average Premier League player at best.

Cole got so annoyed that he was being made to look sub-average that he resorted to kicking one of our our players on the thigh at waist height after losing the ball. I think it was Ameobi he just plain kicked and raked his studs down his thigh. It should have been a red card

On the other hand Jose Enrique has made Valenica look average! I even remember Man U fans on the redcafe i think saying, they've never seen a left back do that to Valenica before!

and again, people say Marcelo had a better season than Jose because he scored more goals even though everyone knows Marcelo can't defend. And the same with leighton baines, he is not the best defensively and that is not doing him a disservice, people say he had a better season because he scored many goals! while forgetting a Left Back's 1st priority is to be a good defender! Not a goalscoring winger.
