Benzema would be an absolute waste of space next to Messi, but fantastic next to many other players.

Higuain, as crap as he was for Argies in big moments, was a better bet for partnering the rest of Argie forwards. Never rated his speed post 2010 back hernia. Perfectly adequate on the rest of his repertoire and a generally a better feel for a shot than his competitor.

Karim always been class at doing his thing back to the goal and fantastic at picking moments in the counter. Even evolved to being more prolific in front of goal in the last 3 years.

For that you should ask those that watch Argies more than me. I never got the impression he was poor for them. Just a victim of a "we have Messi, the greatest weapon in history of the game, we must involve him as much as we can" mentality, which also took hold at Barca.

Who has ever said Higuain was poor and didn't deserve to start lol? All the criticism about Higuain have been about him fluffing chances, which he did in Madrid too.

Higuain started because he was the type of striker that could play for the team, much like Benzema. Aguero struggled without being the man every chance and ball was fed to. Not great at linking up with other players, more of a ball hog. Higuain OTOH could play it on one touch, hold it up and better with his back to the goal.

He didn't really fluff many chances in Madrid. One vs Lyon and one in the Clasico IIRC are what people held against him. Mourinho even preferred him for a while and had to drop him cuz guy lost a step after his injury compared to a player who would slot into right channels to work with Angel and CR.
