Kylian Mbappé

Messi's had insane CL campaigns like in 08/09, 10/11, and 14/15. And same with CR7 with 13/14, 16/17, 17/18. But the average fan/casual barely cared about those.

But will lose their minds over games v Australia, Ghana, S. Korea etc.

So that's pretty much a given.

Nah, different times.
People now watch league games and CL on weekly basis, seeing all the stars competing against each other.
The WC is a 7 games at most every 7 years.
Decades ago it was the time when you see players all over the world against each other, now it is done in the CL.
Not sure which "average fans" didn't care about those phenomenal runs, because almost everyone did.

If anything, people rarely cared about Italian players in 2006, German players in 2014, Griezmann (France best player) in 2018, and even Iniesta didn't touch Messi & CR7 with historic goal in 2010.
WC will always be big because representing Nations is unique experience and pride. Which is no more in clubs, but it won't form the better legacy.

I agree with that, its not even close but when Messi/Ron played fot their nt other teams focused not to give them space as they were by far the most dangerous player, at France there are too many great players so just focusing on Mbappe wont do anything --> he has a lot more freedom to to Mbappe things. Nonetheless Mbappe has been superior.

Nah, he plays with Dembele, 36 year old Giroud, and Griezmann. It's not like he's playing with Rivaldo and R10

Messi and CR7's legacies are CL dominance (pretty even here, although you could argue CR7 has edge) and league dominance (Messi here is by far the GOAT league player during LL's golden era (one of the strongest leagues in history), like Pep as manager).

Their WC records are relatively poor, although Messi's showing has been clearly better than CR7 in WCs.

By far the biggest thing held against Messi is not winning a WC... in some parts because it is about last thing some who dont like him can cling to.

It matters a lot when comparing the best players ever and still pointed to for likes of Maradona and Pele.

It matters big time and if Mbappe dominates WC and wins multiple it will be a huge feather in his cap... particualarly if can get multiple CLs and get goal/assist records to compare with greats in it.

Winning a WC matters more than anything else and always will. Any player will chose a WC over a CL easily.

Muller isn't as much of a main man or regular goalscorer as Mbappe is though. Mbappe is a far safer bet when it comes to scoring.

Muller wasn't anywhere near Mbappe for sure, that being said luck and durability are taken for granted at times.
One injury at wrong time and he might not play next WC (cough, Benzema, cough) and with his reliance on pace it might be his last one at his prime.
Another scenario is him being at absolute peak at both 2026 and 2030 and still serviceable in 2034 too and boom, he might even get twice as Muller

But FIFA are pushing for a WC every 2 years, with African and Asian countries all for it (they hold majority of votes) and all the past records will be smashed easily anyway, even the ones in process.

Mbappe has amazing pace but offer emphasis being made on how much he relies on it.

His assist today was a clever little pass, his first finish was class and used defenders to wrong foot the GK while his second goal was probably clever thiking off back fo first goal and how FK/defence would react.

Mpabbe is more than pace even if it is a major strength.

Yeah Gianni Infantino presented the idea at the beginning of the year. Plus the Euro's being every two years as well.

Probably not as good without his pace, but he's twice the player Haaland is when it comes to technique. Places shots, fires them in, lobs etc you name it. Haaland is much more limited up until now.

Generational talent, but that's pretty obvious for a while now.

Thank Jesus he didn't go to Madrid,

Yet.

Love how so many idiots here were calling him a pace merchant for years, even though it has always been obvious that he was much more than that. I even remember someone here comparing him to Marcus fucking Rashford

Then the narrative changed to "he WAS a pace merchant but training with Messi made him improve his technical skills so much so now he's good at dribbling". Sure, that's definitely what happened
