You take R9's pace away and you still had a world class footballer. You take Mbappe's pace away, you barely have a footballer.

I don't think many people here saw R9 in the 90's to compare him to Mbappe, even in the slightest way.

R9 was one of the 3 players in history God gave talent to, that He gave no other. The top table of football has 3 seats, one for R9, Messi and Maradona. Nobody else comes close to eating at this table.

Mbappe will barely be a Top 50 player of all time. A generational player at best, who will be defined by the most base , simplistic ability of all - raw pace.

Mbappe is not similar to R9 in style of play either.

Stylistically someone like Henry would make more sense. Even that might be a reach.

A better way to put it for me would be a more robotic version of R9 without the Brazilian flair.
R9 was a pure striker.

Mbappe is half the player the moment you don’t let him drift in from the side.

Thats why Vinicius has dropped off a cliff. They still overlap in their preferred areas. Mbappe is just the bigger fish.

Mbappe is not just a pace merchant, be honest. Pace is his most powerful weapon but he has a lot more to his football.

And Pele easily sits on the table, at the very least, with all of Messi, Maradona and R9

Mbappe has that uncanny ability of dropping a complete stinker of a game and then bursting to life with a goals flurry.

He’s like his idol CR7 in this regard. Once CR7 senses blood or an half chance (especially in CL) it was go time.

Well, to be honest, that's a common charasteristic of very great footballers. Speaking of R9, he was no stranger to these either. 2002 WC final is an example.

Agree that great players pull it off but with Mbappe (and CR7) it’s very common.

Argentina 18 WC KO
Argentina 22 WC final
Barca 20/21 CL KO
Barca 23/24 CL KO

Just from memory.

CR7 and Mbappe have different attributes though.

CR7 is taller, greatest in the air, great distance shooter and set piece taker(before he forgot how to take them).

R9 and Mbappe have similar attributes. Similar height, explosive speed and power on the ball, both poor in the air and can't take free kicks. Neither of them are known for long range shooting but had a great shot in and around the box.

Objectively, CR7 was a VERY complete attacker in his peak. I know you hate him but it's true.

When CR7 became an exceptional aerial threat in the box (2014 ish to 2020ish) he was a tap-in merchant / in the box presence.

The long shot version of him existed till 2013ish and at that time he was good to very good in the air but not a menace with headers.

The version you have in mind with all these attributes used heavily at the same time never existed at a single point in time.

He was always great in the air. Maybe not to that level but 2013ish CR7 was still very strong in the air. His header in the Copa final against Barca showed exceptional heading technique.

My point stands because R9 and Mbappe have always been poor in the air unlike CR7.

CR7's peak was 2008-2014 probably. He was extremely complete during this period.

He's nothing like R9.
Not really like henry either, who was a lot smoother with his play.

Can't really compare him to anyone, he's just himself.

Which is good
