Playing 10 vs. 11 usually makes things more difficult. In that sense it is the same when Messi is in the field as the entire team wants to follow the coach instructions and style of play while there is Messi doing Messi things .. players end up adjusting trying to find the middle ground. We saw how they play fluidly when Messi is being rested.
