Still can't understand why VAR called the referee for that handball decision. This smells fishy, something is off here.

The explanation I read is that since it didn't even up being a goal and since the ref didn't call a penalty on the pitch, VAR cannot automatically rule an offside.
So they had to call the ref to watch the pen situation first and then tell him it was offside.
