The explanation I read is that since it didn't even up being a goal and since the ref didn't call a penalty on the pitch, VAR cannot automatically rule an offside.
So they had to call the ref to watch the pen situation first and then tell him it was offside.

But they didn’t tell him it was offside. No lines seemed to be drawn and ref checked for it himself. I dunno how it works…maybe I am off

VAR room told him it was offside. The ref basically did an acting job beforehand.

Similar happened in Scotland with VAR.

They showed ref a handball/penalty decision.. then showed him it was offside and spent about 5 minutes on the penalty part.

Folk were going nuts at the waste of time but they had that as the protocol.
